problems while recording on a used tape

I was recording on an MQ tape for the second time round. I was noticing some strange things such as after i do a zoom in the camcorder does a zoom out by its' own. Then i started seeing footage that was shot the first time round i.e. the one i should have been overwriting. mind you this while recording so i was not even in VCR mode. at this stage i did not know what to think went wrong. then i decided to start recording on a new tape and all these ghostly events stopped. I do not record very much but when i do i usually do this on a new tape, so there were only few times when i recorded on a used tape but those few times none of
this happened.
Any ideas? obviously I would not like to be forced to record on a new tape each time. 10x.

Probably it is not the tape, maybe you turned off the camera between shots or reviewed the tape and you got a small gap (tape slided forward) showing the previews footage in the tape. Never saw anything else while recording besides the image lens is getting...

..nobody will force you to use a new tape each time.. but i will tell you that you probably should.. and that if your shooting anything important theres no way id ever tell you that using a used tape was ok. its just asking for dropouts and such. i dont see how it would cause the camera to do anything different with its zoom or playback functions, but im not really sure what you were doing there.
