Problems in Premiere 4.1 Any help?

So I just found out about the 4.1 update and was very excited, but I am having a couple issues I am hoping someone is willing to help me figure out.

First and most importantly, when I use the 1080 30p preset on AVCHD and then I drop in 1080 30p footage, it isn't native. I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Every other preset drops in footage of coordinating type just fine and needs no rendering. I did some test shooting in the PH 1080 30P and then dragged it to the AVCHD 1080 30p timeline and I get the red line. Is anyone else having this problem or know what I might be doing wrong?

My other problem is that with the 720 24p, 1080 24p, and 720 60p modes, they are not previewing in either on screen monitor in real time and I am getting a lot of jumpiness. They will play fast on draft mode, but it looks terrible and I can't even tell if anything looks right. I think my computer is strong enough to play them back in Highest Quality, but maybe not?

I am running a 2.8ghz Core 2 Duo with a 64bit processor on Vista 64. I have 6 gigs of Ram. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 3670.

Can anyone offer me any help? Thanks in advance!!!!

Is no one else dealing with this? I really want to get this working and don't understand what is wrong.

I saw this post the day you posted it -- but didn't answer because this is not my area of expertise.

The 30P answer should come from our leader -- The Honorable Barry Green. 30P isn't listed as "native" by Panasonic -- but Mr. Green mentioned that it should be because the frames are "flagged." In theory I understand this -- but not well enough to offer a complete answer. Also, in six plus months of testing the HMC -- I'm laughing as I realize that I've never once shot "30p."

Regarding PPCS4 performance -- heh... uh... well... my systems are quad core and, although PPCS4 is not close to perfect -- I don't have the problems you report. The only issue at which I may guess is that I think -- think -- the graphics card you cite is one of those shared memory things -- meaning it feeds off your system RAM. BUT -- I could very well be entirely wrong. The idea here is that I'm suggesting this may be a graphics card issue -- but that's just a vague and generally unqualified response -- and that's the reason I didn't respond initially.

So -- the bottom line -- I really have no response of any kind of value to offer. This forum has been extremely helpful to me and others in the past -- so I hope someone with something helpful to offer responds.

Good luck!

Thanks for responding. I was just feeling all alone. I was definitely hoping for Barry to respond since he seems to have done the most testing with 4.1 and the HMC. I bought this camera last fall and have yet to get it to work the way it should in editing. I was really excited that this 4.1 update came out, and I just REALLYYYY want it to start working properly so I can stop having all these head aches.

The easy answer is -- "transcode" -- that would solve all the problems your report.

I don't use Mac and know absolutely nothing about it. For PC there's a free utility from Panasonic that converts the camera's AVCHD files to DVCPROHD files. On the PC with Premiere -- those DVCPROHD files are absolutely the best performing files with which I've ever worked.

If your goal is to preserve the resolution -- meaning put out true 1920 by 1080 or 1280 by 720 -- then ProCoder 3 is useful -- and with the right settings you can output full 1920 by 1080 CanopusHQ files.

If Cineform ever got around to fixing their issues with CS4 -- then it's an option. If they haven't had time to get to that as yet -- then Cineform stinks with CS4.

On my systems transcoding was easy and significantly faster than real time. Truly, nothing about which to complain.

Good luck!

I tried CS4 Premiere with some 1080/24p footage I shot in November on an HMC150. The playback was crap... few seconds, then lockup, as in must use force quit in Mac OSX. Occasionally run for a few seconds, go into macro blockness, then lock up...

The solution at the moment in my opinion is to transcode from AVCHD to <anything reasonable>. Then work on editing your film...

I did my update, but it didn't fix the problems. I do have all the native presets now and most of them work, but super slow playback with the macro blocks also. The 1080 30p preset won't work with my 1080 30P footage natively for some reason.

The Panasonic free transcoder looks terrible to me. The footage is far lower quality, at least for me. I can't understand why everyone says to use it. Am I the only one getting much lower quality video out of it than what I put in?

I don't know Procoder 3, what is that and can anybody vouch that the quality is the same in as out as opposed to the Panasonic freebie?

Really, I just want to work in CS4 the way it is supposed to work!!!!

Barry, please help.... :-(
