Problems formatting/Seeing Panasonic Gold 16GB

Hi,

Recently I bought two 16GB Panasonic Gold UHS1 Class 10 SDHC cards from B&H Photo and Video.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...RP_SDU16GU1K_16GB_SDHC_UHS_1_Memory_Card.html

I just receive the cards, and following Barry Green's advice from the AF100 Book, I am trying to format the cards using Panasonic SD Formatter with the Full Flash Erase option. I also bought the Flash Memory Toolkit software so to have a tool for recovery and bad sector management.

Unfortunately I am having several problems.

I tried formatting the card with Version 2,0 and version 3.0 beta of the Panasonic SD Formatter software, but each time I am getting an error telling me that my card does not support Flash Erase. Only Overwrite and the quick format works.

When I open the Flash Memory Toolkit 2.01, I cannot see the card at all, as it only says: No Devices Found, even when I hit refresh.

But I am having a couple of hunches:

Can it be that I should not had bought the UHS version? (I did not have much choice since the previous Gold model is discontinued wherever I look).
Can it be that my SD card reader, which is part of my laptop, is too old to be compatible ? (It's an HP nw8440 from 2007).

I am wondering what to do:

Should I buy another card with an older standard? What would be a good reliable and fast fit for the AF100?
Should I buy an USB 2.0 external card reader that support newer standards? Like:

Is there anything I should try before buying or returning anything?

Thank you so much for your help! Hopefully this is the right forum section for this question.

Hi,

I just tried to format the card in camera.

I do not get an error, I can see the card in the explorer with a Label CAM_SD, and three folders: DCIM, MISC and PRIVATE.

But I can't see the card in Flash Memory Toolkit 2.01, even if I do a refresh.

The formatting in the camera felt like a quick format though, is there any way to do a full format in camera? Can this be why Flash Memory Toolkit can't see my cards?

Also I see on the Cards package the mention 3D. Does it mean that it is especially conceived for 3D type cameras?

Why are you messing with SD tool kit (whatever that is) ?

Format in camera...record to it as a test and then shoot to it.

Mainly I wanted to have a tool to do recovery and bad sector cleaning if ever these problem arose in the future. This is a tip I got from the AF100 book.
