Problems after formatting external Maxter HD

Had a big problem after hooking up my maxter 200G external HD and formatting (via book instructions). After the formatting of the maxter 200G external HD was completed by the HVX 200, I transferred data from one of the P2 (8G) cards to the HD through the camera. Transfer media back into the HD via direct hook up to my Apple 15" laptop. Now the HD says I only have 7.6G of usable space instead of 189G. Now I guess it's time to send the HD back to the factory for a factory reformat I think. Any Ideas?

Are you using 8 gig cards? When the HVX dumps a card to an external HD it creates a seperate partition for each card. If you only unloaded 1 8 gig card to the drive and it wasnt' totally full, that may have resulted in a 7.6 gig partition with the rest of your drive open for new partitions. Try dumping several cards onto the drive and then plug it into your computer, you should get a different drive letter for each partition....... I think [:)]

That's the way the camera works. It formats the hard disk itself, and turns it all into one big unallocated pool of space.

Then for each card that you offload, it allocates a partition from that pool of space. If you're using 8gb cards it'll create an (approximately) 8gb partition. The rest of the drive is unallocated. So you can keep offloading cards and it'll keep creating new partitions, until it either a) runs out of drive space, or b) runs out of the total # of partitions it can create (which is 15).

Look in the camera menus when you go to offload a card and you'll see that it shows the space used and the available space remaining.

There's nothing wrong with your drive and no reason to send it back to the factory. If you're using a drive for offloading cards you should dedicate that drive specifically for the purpose of offloading cards; don't try to use it for any other purpose because the camera will need to reformat it to recover the space and allocate its partitions from.

Thank you so much both of you. I'm always learning. I found a way to Velcro strap the HD to the side of my Panasonic Tri pod, and a platform on the middle to hold my laptop. Put the dolly on the bottom and well.... it’s good to be king in a forum room full of cameras. If only I can stop forgetting my business cards.
