Problem with Sony EX1 Focus and Brevis

Ok, so I have only had the Sony EX1 for a few weeks after coming over from the HVX200 and so far I really like it. I am having a problem though that was hoping someone could give me some insight on. When I go to hook up my Brevis35 to the EX1 and try to focus on the GG there is simply no close focus. Meaning that at the closest focus distance the focus is still extremely soft seeing basically nothing. When zoomed all the way out at full wide I can sort of see the image in the GG, but as soon as I zoom in at all to frame it, it cannot focus at all. Is there something wrong with the focus on my EX1? Backfocus issue? Are there some adjustments I can make to get this to work properly?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks
Ryan

Hey tom,

Thanks for the response. The macro switch does not seem to make a difference at all on my camera. It's not an issue of getting focus across the whole glass. I have no focus at all in any of the frame which leads me to believe it is an issue with my camera. Anyone else have this issue?

Was the lens focus ring in the forward/auto position while you were in macro mode? I think I read something about this on the boards. Also, have you noticed any other focus issues at all with the camera?

No but I just tried it and it does not seem to change at all in macro mode. As far as other focus issues. I have noticed that the camera's focus seems to drift according to the on screen distance meter. For example, if I am zoomed in and focus to say 1 metre and I zoom all the way out the meter jumps to around 1.5 metres. Anyone else have this problem?

Also, the minimum focus distance from the camera to an object 1 metres? is this right?

Thanks all for any input it is appreciated.

I never used the camera with an adapter... one meter sounds about right for the minimum focus distance.

If you haven't already done this... focus ring in front position and make sure camera is in full auto mode(the switch on the camera body) while macro mode is on.

I would also check with brevis tech support pertaining to the ex1.

The reason it's not focusing is because you need the flip module.
The flip creates a much longer optical path...thus the ground glass is further away and you will then be able to get focus on the ground glass.

It's not a fault of the brevis, just a necessary upgrade. The letus extreme has a built in flip so that's why it's alright. Once you get the flip module you will be fine. You may also want to pick up the CF XL ground glass which allows the ex1/ex3 to get much sharper edge to edge. My workaround is only zoom in till the edges of the GG are at the 90% safety marker on the LCD. Then zoom 10% in post.

Cheers
Tom

If its generally an issue with close focus on the EX - I dont know as Ive never tried it, but if it is, you dont need to spend on the flip unless you really want it. Spacer tubes with some step up or down, whatever it needs will get you the extra length. Id confirm the min focal distance first though to be sure.

Hey Guys,

I spoke to Hubert over at Cinevate last week and he confirmed you need either a spacer or a flip. I tested it at a nearby store with a flip and works great. I have opted to go with the flip as it makes my life a lot easier anyways not having to flip the image with an external monitor on camera. Looking at the new diffuser as well as it seems to have fixed some of the issues pretty well. Cant wait to get the flip and put this great camera and adaptor to use.

Why do you do that instead of zooming in past the vignetting?

Also how sharp are the corners when you have the EX-1 @ f1.9?

Lenny

The more you zoom in on the GG with the EX1 the softer the corners and because the EX1 is so clean and crisp, 10% zoom in in post does nothing distinguishable to the resolution but helps a bit with the focus across the whole GG.

I'm saving up for the CFXL and a new follow focus....sick of putting up with my indifocus pro shite!
