GH3 Problem with Manual Settings on GH3 (switches to auto when filming starts)

Hi All

I've just got a GH3 (having previously had a GH1/GH2) but if I try to film in manual mode, as soon as I start filming it switches to auto and I cannot change anything (aperture, shutter speed, iso or whatever). This is also the case in A and S priority modes. I never had this problem on the GH1/GH2. Has anyone else come across this problem or has the design changed and am doing something wrong?

Thanks

You shouldn't film in any other mode than the 'motion picture mode', which is the mode with M and the little camera next to it.

...thanks: that seems like a backward step because if that's the case then there's no longer full manual control of shutter speed when filming but instead the camera automatically dictates the shutter speed (presumably 50fps for PAL and 24p, 60 fps for NTSC) and that aperture is controlled by the +/- rather than setting it oneself. I may be wrong but there must be a way to override this.

I'm not sure I understand the issue. If you set it to Creative Video Mode, the one with the M and the camera next to it, you can control both shutter and aperture using the 2 wheel dials.

...yes, I agree that it should be possible to control both, but this is not the case and so it looks like it might be a faulty unit. I wanted to make sure as I've actually got 6 more GH3s arriving Monday and they need to have full rather than partial manual control.

The Creative Video Mode defaults to Program mode -- the camera adjusts shutter and aperture. To get Creative Movie Mode into Manual mode:

1. switch to Creative movie mode using the top, right dial
2. click the Menu Set button on the back of the camera
3. in the Motion Picture settings category, select the Exposure Mode option (it's on the first screen of options)
4. click the menu/set button again to display the options, and select M to swith to manual exposure

you can then use the back dial to change shutter speed, and the front dial to change aperture.

Sawmac... that fixed it: as you suggested it was defaulting to Program Mode and as a result the camera was adjusting the settings automatically. Following your instructions allowed for full manual control. Thanks very much for sorting that out (and everyone else that commented).

FYI: You can also adjust the ISO speed while recording with the GH3. It's not a subtle control, but it can be handy when you want to keep shooting and the light on your subject suddenly changes.

Panasonic must have teenagers developing the interaction and functionality paradigms of their GH series :(

I think its pretty straight forward. hasnt changed at all from gh1 to gh3. want to shoot movie, switch to movie icon(just like most cameras now days) on the dial, set your controls to either M A S P just like photos. done. or one could read the manual =)

Thank you - This Solved Having Manual Control in Movie Mode (M w/Camera Icon)

I was having the same issue (and was under a time crunch for a shoot) so this is much appreciated. I need to take a deeper dive on this camera because I too am starting to shoot with it in place of my GH2. I could read the manual of course...hmmm. Thank you very much!
