FS5: Problem with hiss using Sony D11 with SMAD-P3

I am having significant hiss when using the D11 receiver / transmitter through the SMAD MI shoe adapter to my FS5.

This is someone elses video that highlights the problem. It is using a different camera but the result is the same as I have found in my own testing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS7tWGS8xTg&t=1s

When using the same kit but using the 3.5mm out - XLR into the camera, the noise is gone. So it seems like a problem with the SMAD alone.

There are a few threads in other forums dotted around that raise this issue, but none seem to have a definitive answer on a fix. I'll try calling Sony prime tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

I have also been experiencing a tangibly raised noise floor when using the xlr km1 adapter to gain 4x xlr inputs into the fs7.

Haven't found any fix, not sure if it's a 'hardware limitation' of the MI-shoe circuits, or if it could be improved with FW update.

Annoying though!

I've used the SMAD with my D11 receiver on my FS7 with great success. I've been doing this for a year and have not experienced a raised noise floor. In fact, I cannot find a difference between the D11 I have plugged into an XLR vs the one I have plugged into the shoe.

However, that being said, I plugged the same SMAD and D11 receiver into my A7SII's hot shoe and experienced exactly what you are talking about. The raised noise floor from using the hot shoe with the D11 was awful. I then plugged it into the A7SII's 3.5 mic input and it fixed it. It actually sounded great with the mic input. I did some reading and found that pretty much everyone else experienced this with their A7SII as well.

I'm assuming that, for whatever reason, the FS7's shoe has either better hardware or better firmware supporting it than the A7SII has, and I'll bet based on your findings that the same goes for the FS5.

Thanks for your reply, having your kit work with the FS7 and then have issues with the A7SII is quite telling that it may not be a hardware problem with the SMAD itself, but hardware/software related in cameras other than the FS7. The situation looks bleak then for mirrorless and FS5 users, as you'd hope that Sony would have fixed this by now if it was just a software issue in those cameras.
