Shot image movie with hvx200 + sgpro rev 3
0db gain, 720/50p aperture between 0-4
we had a lot of problems with gain, in dark areas as in bright areas.
any idea whats the problem?
camera or adaptor?

shot a music video with the xha1 2 months ago, there was everything ok!

Wow, I've watched it 10 times now and I can't see it. It may just be camera noise.

If it's grain from the adapter, it would be in a semi-circular patern and really visible against a light background like those curtains. If that's what your seeing (and again, I don't see it), that's typically caused by stopping the 35mm lens down too much. Spinning adapters like the SGPro typically can stop down a fair amount before you see grain. I shot a bright blue sky with my SGBlade with the 35mm lens stopped down to f8 and didn't see any grain.

converting to h246 is basically like chucking a grain removal filter on your footage..... i couldn't see anything either. at least nothing that didn't look like normal video noise. it looked quite good actually. nice and filmic :)

what was your lighting setup?

yeah it is really not so much grain like in the original footage!

i will upload another file soon,

we had much lighting because we had to shoot against the windows

we had 3 x arri 800
2 x 4bank 120 cm
1 x 200 arri daylight and 1x 575 arri daylight

I agree with xha1 dude. If you notice there is a lot of grain in his hair. And to top it off he shot it during the day with a lot of lighting. Which isnt like shooting during night with low lights. I would like clarification on issue because i ve encountered it myself.

here's my theory on it....

the the SGpro shouldn't make the footage grainier coz it's a spinner right. but i think it just makes normal video noise more obvious.

normal video noise is usually hidden by fine/high frequency detail. but as soon as you have smooth soft details, like out of focus/soft focus areas and given the picture you're now capturing is less resolution, the normal (always there!) grain stands out more.

and the HVX is a noisy camera in the first place... the SGpro just makes it more obvious

or something like that :)

actually that explanation makes a lot of sense. can anyone confirm his theory on the grain?

Ah, now I see what you're talking about. That's definately not grain from the adapter's GG. It looks like noise from the camera, to me.

any ideas how to reduce it?

The noise reduction software, like Neatvideo, could help. Telling truth I don't consider the noise level in your footage excessive. Maybe this is because I got used to it (I've been Panasonic user for long time) :)
I asked about the gamma curve, because some people reported increased noise in the shadoes when using Cinelike D gamma.

i just used after effects noise reduction for a small test, works good, but takes 30 minutes rendering for this 15 sec clip!

I agree, the noise in your video is not excessive. I've used the NeatVideo plug in. It is excellent and does some amazing stuff. I think it's $99 for the HD version.
