Problem with Atomos Samurai

Hey Guys,

We just got a Atomos Samurai, I've never used the SDI Out on my AF102 Before. Went out and bought a 1.5M RG-59U BNC Coaxial Cable. Connect everything up, charge the batteries, turn it on and the Samurai displays 'No Input'

Settings on the AF102, SDI Out is ON. SDI OUT SEL is on 1080i/720P , and I'm shooting at 1080 25P, (Tried all the other shooting formats and its the same though)

While playing around with the cables, rescrewing them in etc...
For one brief moment, the Samurai started going crazy, timecode jumping around etc the Record Button illuminated and dis illuminated multiple times etc, and then went back to 'No Input'

Now if I change the SDI OUT SEL to Down Conversion, then there is input and Samurai is ready to record, but when I go into the Monitor screen, there are these strange lines on the side that slowly multiplies and then goes crazy again.

I have updated it to the latest firmware.

Can anyone help? =( A little worried cause we bought the samurai awhile ago but didnt try it out cause we couldnt find the BNC cable, and worst im worried if the SDI out on my camera is faulty cause Ive never used it before and it's been more than a year now X.X"

Thanks very much.

Are you sure your BNC cable is connected properly to the camera? At times it can give you the impression that it is ... but is not really. Do you use a really good cable with solid connectors? Had some trouble a while ago with cheap products. Had about the same effects as you describe.

Im not sure how else I could connect the cable properly beside pushing in as hard as possible and then screwing the BNC Connector thing till it is maximum.

Not sure about cheap cables, I bought the cable for 10 Australian Dollars. It was hard enough for me to find this BNC Cable as all the big electronic retailers around here do not carry it or have no idea what I have talking about at all.

Hmmmm... weird. Cheap connectors (or, better, let's say cheaply constructed ones) can create problems at times. Does anything happen when you wiggle the connector (carefully!) and or cable a bit? Have others any idea?

Nope. I've sent an email to Atomos though.

Is it at all possible that the HDSDI output from the camera itself is faulty?

Thanks guys for your responses, I waved and dance Paul, no luck.

I changed the frequency to 60Hz and the Samurai kicked into life going crazy again, unusable. Go back to 50hz and its the same 'no input'. I went and found a different SDI cable, same thing, I connected my camera to a monitor using the HDSDI slot and it showed an image so I dont think my camera is at fault.

Are there any setting I am suppose to set on the camera that I might have missed?

I initially had problems with mine. It was the cable. Replaced the bnc i was using, and then everything was ducky.

I came her just to search for this and it´s the top thread. I have image in my Samurai. It kind of goes into record, but only records bits at a time. The RED bars are blinking while recording. Very weird. The Samurai works fine with my Epic. Any thoughts?

UPDATE: Problem solved. I forgot to change the trigger setting. It was set to RED not Panasonic. Problem solved
