problem with 1394 port?

i don't know if i'm missing something but i have had my dvx-100a since 12/24/03

i have about 85 hours on it.

except for a few times when i first got it i haven't used it for capture, i have been using a sony trv-19 and/or a sony gv-d900 deck

i tried hooking up my dvx-100a to one of my computers and it couldn't see it

i thought it was the 1394 port on the computer so i spent a whole bunch of time trying to figure out why the computer could see the trv-19 and not the dvx-100a

but now i'm thinking it is something to do with the dvx-100a's 1394 port?

is there any menu item that might possibly disable the 1394 port?

how about a good test that i haven't thought of?

other than hooking it up to two different pc's with 1394 ports i have tried connecting it directly to the trv-19 and the gv-d900 and neither see's the dvx-100a

What is the 1394 chipset (onboard?) if it is Texas instrument, you may need to add a inexpensive pci firewire card

Re: problem with 1394 port?

I've had issues with a PD-100 with this matter. Sometimes the port on the camera can come loose. Make sure you wiggle around the cable and make sure you are getting a connection. Either way, you may need to have something looked at.

If you've used different firewire cables on different computers with no luck, you have a problem with the DVX.

Re: problem with 1394 port?

i have used the cable and the card on the computer with two other devices and it works fine.

it is only the dvx-100a that doesn't work via 1394

i tried wiggling the cable and other cables just in case there was one other cable that might work, but no luck.

i have hardly used the 1394 port at all on this camera.

i was only trying it because i'm having zero luck capturing my footage via the matrox rtx-100 card and i thought that there might be a slim chance that the other devices i was using where somehow blocking some info that the dvx-100a might pass that the sony devices were masking?

Re: problem with 1394 port?

well i spoke with panasonic tech support today (first time i ever called and they were GREAT!)

my 1394 port is fried

sent my dvx-100a off for repair, should have it back sometime late next week

gonna be paranoid about NOT plugging the camera into the 1394 while the computer is on.

Firewire is plug and play. You don't have to shut-off anything to plug-in our out.

Re: problem with 1394 port?

Yeah, it is plug and play and should not cause a problem most of the time however I was talking to my service guy last month and he brought up the subject. He said it was a bigger problem with Macs - something about a ground differential or some such thing. Takes out the 1394 control chip. And, since the chip leads are so small they have to replace the whole board - the main board! The "advice" is: power things up together.

Re: problem with 1394 port?

well that is what i always thought, that the whole beauty of firewire was that you could plug/unplug anytime you wanted.

but the tech i spoke with said that he repairs a lot of panasonic and jvc pro/broadcast cameras and that is one of the more common problems.

it looks to me like he was correct and i'm going to be very careful in the future.
