problem regarding macroblocking...

I must be doing something wrong because this footage I shot on the GH1 has a lot of noise, dancing pixels or macroblocking going on. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?

Is it that the camera should have been on a tripod? Or is it simply the limitation of the AVCHD codec regarding complex scenes like water running, or snow falling?

I'm just trying to figure out what I did wrong. Any help is much appreciated.

The footage was shot 720/60p on the GH1 slowed to 24p via Cinema Tools.

What you did wrong was not having a hot chick - preferably a red head for some nice colour contrasts to the bluish forrest - close-up to focus at so the trees and snow would be soft in a nice bokeh. Then I also would have something pretty to look at. I like to look at pretty things. See attached example.*

OK - more seriously this is one scenario where GH1's encoding isn't fully up to snuff. You have snow falling to the level of near noise and deep DOF. To be honest I think it held up better than I would expect. You didn't do anything particularly wrong.
Then again I've seen shots like this tax HDV cameras too, even non-real time software long GOP codec compression adds some blocking to this amount of 'noise' and the terrestrial digital TV transmission here in Sweden can choke badly on a clip like this - especially on lower bandwidth channels. It's the nature of the long GOP beast unfortunately.

*Any ladies here taking offense to my blatant sexism let me know and I'll replace Ms Moore with Conan O'Brian.

Hi Martti and thanks for the feedback. Loved that image. I'm a big fan of Julianne Moore. She's a very beautiful and talented actress. On a more serious note, I'll follow your advice regarding AVCHD. I should have had the background more out of focus and used one of my prime lenses. That was done with the GH1 stock lens. Thanks for your help.

I have video of snowfall and I don't see that kind of macroblocking.

That looks like it had something set wrong when re-compressing at some point.
 
Hi Svart,

Could you post a link to your footage? I'm sure I did something wrong. Can you share what your technique was? How did you avoid the issue I had?
