Problem not with cards but with cameras internal card reader

Hello Forum,

I have lurked around here for quite some time but this is my first post . I do so now because I see this is a hotspot for HMC150 users and I just finished Mr. Green's HMC150 book.

I just sent 2 units back to Panasonic for diagnostics. Both cameras have not seen very heavy use since their purchase about a year ago. I would say moderate use.

Both cameras started giving a CHECK CARD warning. I know all about the requirement to format cards in camera. I've confirmed that it's not the cards since it has happened quickly to new cards (on second insertion). On Sandisk Extreme as well as Transcend, (class 6).

I can eject and reinsert the cards a couple or several times and walla! they begin working.

I have not found anything similar to this issue on the web and Panasonic stated that they are unfamiliar with any similar complaints like this, where it is not indeed the case of faulty cards or improper formatting. They speculate that it must somehow be attributable to the cameras' internal card readers.

Anybody here have this problem?

I'll report back here when Panasonic gets back to me.

Thanks,

I just got a call from Panasonic re my issue. Both cameras are having their memory card circuit boards replaced. I don't have a detailed report by mail yet (was informed that I'll get one) so I don't have any details but I doubt there will be any. They saw the problem, realized it was not a card issue and will replace the boards.

The cameras are exactly one year old and by most professionals' standards (at least in mine) they have had moderate use. They have never been subject to harsh, outdoor conditions. I've never used superglue on cards that are falling apart! The electrical terminals on the cards were never dirty. The cards themselves were never somehow malfunctional and thus somehow at fault in causing the circuit boards to malfunction.

I'd like to hear from other users who are in my category.

Thanks!

I've just returned from a week long shoot and both cameras had arrived before my return. Both reader boards were summarily replaced without any explanation.

I'll be checking for any comments re anyone having the same problem with their camera's internal card readers.

HMC seems to be the culprit

HMC seems to be the culprit

Just got my first "card error" messege after recording some few clips outside, i formatted the card in the morning before i left for some recording, all went well, now i come home and HMC151 is giving me this card error.
Since i was doing a test to match the HMC151, GH1 and GH2, i removed the card from th HMC151 and placed it in the GH1, the GH1 doesn't complain, but wouldn't play the HMC151 recorded clips. I then try to record to the card and to my surprise the GH1 records with no error messege at all.
I then place the card into HMC151 and all the clips i recorded prior to card error are there except one., even the GH1 clip is there. The GH1 is a year older than the HMC151, but i've never experienced a card error with it, this strengthens wsmith claim that it is not a card problem. All my cards are SanDisk.

I know it's been so long since I've come around and this thread is probably stale. However I'll update this with two things that have happened since.

1) a while ago, B&H when asked about this said "Oh yeah! We know all about it! You can't use any cards larger than 16GB." We'll we purchased some 16GB cards from them on the spot and which happened to be Sandisk Class 6 cards and that indeed fixed the problem. (They had originally sold us the 32GB Transcend cards were had been using)

2) About 2 weeks ago when speaking with Panasonic support re other questions, I raised this before closing the call. I stated what B&H said and the tech person contradicted that by saying that's "not true." What is true is this: "You need to use cards that are at least Class 6, AND, that are specifically designed for media and not designed for data-only." He said that "cards like Transcend are not truly designed for A/V media and that explains the wide disparities in price."

Thanks wsmith this has just happened to me as well (unfortunately just at the time when Im trying to sell the cam :( ) Does the issue count as a manufacturing fault? And Ive always wondered why Transcend were always so much cheaper. Does anyone know of any online article/video/podcast that explains the differences?

Much appreciated
J
