Problem: jumpy, shaky footage/lcd

Not my cam, but my "b" shooter's dvx100a suddenly stopped working properly.

I'm assuming it's an issue with the OIS.

The image is "jumping" up and down just a bit. I searched and came across another thread where this has happened, but it was never resolved.

At first I guessed that it was just the LCD, but upon playback, it was recorded like that. Not good... we were on a paying shoot.

Anyway, any ideas/suggestions on what to do or how much this is gonna cost him?

p.s. Turned the OIS off, but it was still doing it. On a tripod, the image looks like its shaking up and down about 1/8th of an inch (on the flipout LCD).

Bump. Really... this hasn't happened to anyone else?

This camera is in prestine condition, and has under 100 hours on it. How did this happen?

If you read my responses in that other thread that you linked to, you'll see that my problem just magically disappeared. Don't know how and I have no suggestions on how to do that. I don't know how this happens either. My camera had about 200 hours on it and was in great shape otherwise. One day the problem just started to happen and then one day it stopped.

But you're right in what the problem is. It's the optical image stabilizer and I had the exact same problem that you did. I was told by a couple of different service centers that this usually requires a lens assembly replacement, which is around $1,000. But, I'd ask around yourself. Start with Spec-Comm. Not sure if you know Andrew here on the board but he's really helpful and quick to respond to any inquiries. Goes by the name of Spec-Comm. ;)

This happens on a recent shoot where I was an AD. The camera was lock down on a tripod with OIS off and the image was floating slightly up and down and up and down. It was damn weird. Not sure if the problem was solved. But it's definitely something that is becoming increasingly common.

If the footage is already recorded and it's a paying gig then perhaps it can be salvaged by stabilizing motion tracking in After Effects.

Thanks... I'll check it out.

So, yours just dissapeared huh? has it ever come back at all??

Yep, just went away. Hasn't returned in over a month of shooting. I hope the same happens to you, but I was extremely shocked when mine "fixed itself".

Also, what Jade mentioned can work too, depending on your footage. Mine was a locked shot at the back of a theater for a stage show, so stabilizing it wasn't very difficult. Best of luck on it.

This has something to do with the OIS and the lens assembly. I wish I could remember the exact term but it happened to mine about two years ago. I had it serviced and it had something to do with corrosion on a ribbon connection that goes to the OIS. It was more about cleaning those connections, than replacing anything, but it still cost me $350.00. It's been great ever since. It starts off subtly and then gets real bad, and it happens with DVX100A's. This authorized Panasonic service guy said he had seen it a lot.
