Hello I'm relatively new to editing and have made just two short films - but both of these have so far not managed to have any music added to them..!

I try and add files from itunes but it just wont let me: I get the dreaded beeping noise and then it locks down all my work so I have to 'force quit' and then loose most of my work...!

Can anyone spare 5 minutes and give me a step by step guide to what I need to do...

It would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Rob :)

Dreaded beeping noise is telling you it doesn't like compressed audio.

You need to get your audio files to 48k 16bit.

I hope you aren't trying to use music (from iTunes) that you don't have PERMISSION to use from the owner of the music.

Step by step ripping music from iTunes? Not sure I can do that. Did you read your TOS for iTunes and purchasing music on the iTunes store?

No....I suppose being ignorant, I thought that once I had payed my 79 pence to buy that tune I could USE it..??

So what music can I use..? I've heard famous peices of music used on members video's - so how did they get round it :) ??

No... actually - by paying your money you only LEASE the music for uses described in the agreement. Same for 'buying' a CD. However, yes - there are ways around it. Being an producer of music myself I won't tell you how. But that doesn't mean you can't find it in this vast wasteland of information called the internet.

Paying your 79p gives you the right to listen to the music, not use it in video production. To use music in video production you need to get what is called the "sync rights." There are certain cases where you don't need this, like in home videos that you only show the family, but if you make money making this video, or you show it to a vast audience (film festival) then you need to secure the rights.

Yeah on a technical level there are easy ways to circumvent iTune's digital rights management which I won't go into here because they are illegal, and you can find them yourself on Google in about 4 seconds.

On that legal/moral issue level you are essentially stealing. When you buy a copywritten track from iTunes you are buying the right to listen to it, not to synchronize it to a soundtrack and make a movie with it. If you were to ever exhibit that movie or charge for it, you'd be legally liable for paying the original rights owners and that can easily run into five figures or more. To say nothing of potential lawsuits.

Now of course if it's just for your own personal use you do whatever you feel is ok but you at least know what you're risking in terms of the law.

Thanks Noah - so then,...being as I just want to know as I am practicing and TRYNG to learn how to use F.C.Express...can someone tell me how I would go about it in a straight forward basic way for a new beginner.....pleeeeaaasse :)

I will only be using the knowledge for Home movie footage. THANKYOU

Yeh - and I tried,...but not knowing really too much to look for I was hoping for some help rather than sarcasm. Never mind...I'll ask in my class tomorrow.
Thanks anyway.

It ISN'T sarcasm.

I told you twice I would refuse to tell you how to BREAK THE LAW. Even Noah told you the same thing.

Go ask your buds. I'm sure they have all the techniques needed. But you won't hear it from me.

Cry all you want about it. I stand firm. BTW -- I hope it isn't my music you've downloaded from iTunes. Home movies or not, you still face the same standards of enforcement.

Robstene:

Plain and simple. Unless you have a license to use music in a video production, you are breaking the law if you do.

That costs all of us who are observing the licensing laws a bunch of money.

You agreed to a license when you purchased from iTunes.

Best to keep your word

I'm not crying about it mate. Trust me. My friends band is on itunes; of which I have downloaded their album from, and also have permission to use - I just wanted to simply ask the question of adding music files to Express.

well assuming you're not using copyrighted music which obviously gets people very upset around here.............

are you sure your music is rendered? it's pretty easy to get a music track in there. when in your project, press COMMAND I ( APPLE + I ) to import new file, find the mp3 you want (altho aiff or .wav files are always best to use), choose it, import it and it'll show up in your browser. then drag it onto the timeline. if the render line above it is red, it needs to be rendered.

click on the song in your timeline and press APPLE + R to render it.

if it still gives you that beep then it's something else i guess.... sorry if this was too basic... just not sure how much help you need... good luck.. :)

It doesn't matter if you have permission to use your friend's band's music. If you download from iTunes, you observe that license.

And you aren't asking a simple question about adding music to FCE.

That's why you are getting the responses in this thread.

Were it that easy. Unfortunately music from the iTunes music store is not MP3 to prevent exactly this sort of piracy. Dude- go google, 'itunes rip music to fcp'. If you can't work google you shouldn't be doing this anyway. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):And that's it...
