Probably a silly question about exposure

I'm trying to press down the roller on the GH1 to change the exposure as it says in the manual. I know without pressing it, it changes the shutter speed but pressing it does nothing. Am I stupid, or can I not change the exposure seperate from the shutter speed.. or is that something that has to be done from the lens if not using the kit lens?

When you say exposure you mean exposure compensation. does not work in full manual, has to be in a mode like A or S in either video or stills for you to switch between shutter and exposure compensation.

Sorry to piggyback but this exposure compensation thing is confusing me a little.. when on M or CUST settings and trying to take still pictures I cant stop compensation, if I move the camera from an open window into the room it just adjusts the exposure automatically from blowing out, this is when I have shutter control through the dial. Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

when you are taking stills picture just like a traditional dslr it will not show you. you have to hone your photography skills to adjust accordingly, ie learn how to read the situation, lighting, subject, select appropriate settings, take a photo and review and adjust.

you can however cheat on the gh1 by setting it all up to how you like in movie mode and then switching to stills to take the picture. I do this alot =)
