hi, i bought an ntg 2 mic for my dvx and now i need to buy headphones, any recommendations? Do most of you folk use more pro type headphones or can you use regular stereo head phones or is necessary to spend more on pro-ish ones?

If you really want to save you can use whatever headphones and keep an eye on the bars, make sure you are not clipping. But if you really want good audio, and anyone that gets it does, then you might want to try to pick up a nice set of MDR-7506 ($89 shipped and no tax HERE) which will help you with a clean representation of what's being recorded. Their only benefit is that they make it easier to hear possible issues and color in your audio, which means you will be able to detect issues, better audio placement, etc, without having to make such a bigger effort to hear this stuff. Depending on the cheap headphone solution you may pick some of the stuff might not even be there to be heard.

I'd go into a store with your headphones and do a comparison, side by side. That way you'll know what you are getting.

Audio is 50% of your project.

If you want a little bit cheaper than the 7506, try the MDR-V6. They're essentially the same thing, but the V6 are a little cheaper.

They are QUALITY headphones for a great price.

Depends on what you shoot, but if you want to *hear* the sound, not just monitor it, then you need 'closed' phones, not 'open' ones.

These isolate background location sound and there's many brands around.

Cheers.

Good point. I also have a Senheiser HD 280's which do that trick very well, got them at a pawn shot for nothing! The guy had no clue what they were and they had a small crack.

The MDR's give a much clearer sound though, easier to hear intricacies. They can also help to keep you from running people over from not being able to hear them yelling at you that you are about to kill them with your boom pole. :D It depends what you need. On a loud set (wind) it would be great to have the option, but if I had to pick one I'd go with MDR's.

I use a pair of AKG K77's. $50 from B&H and they are great quality and very comfortable. They are over the ear, and the top part automatically conforms to the size of your head, so you don't have to manually adjust it. Plus, there is only a cord on the left earphone so it is easier to take them on/off if your hands are full. Tested these side-by-side with a few others including the Bose around the ear headphones. The Bose ones eliminate the outside noise more which is nice, but the sound quality was identical in my opinion.
