Pro Tools upgrade to 8

Simple question today.:)

I am running Pro Tools LE 7.2... not 7.4. Does the standard upgrade to 8 apply? (i'm thinking $$$-wise) The upgrade looks to be $149 flat...and I see no other levels of upgrade (like you have to do with products like Adobe). Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

You should be fine, but check compatibility to make sure your computer and OS will handle ProTools 8.

Digi generally has only one upgrade price per product, though there is sometimes a break if your a short time owner. Hardware upgrade prices are more version specific. So make sure your system is compatible, really truly honestly do check. If yours is not on the compatible list 8 might still work but you open your self up for a possible nightmare of bad behavior. And if you do go with 8, they just released the first CS for it so download that also.

PT 8 works *only* with OSX 10.5.5, although some users are reporting it's working fine on 10.5.6. It will otherwise run on any system that ran PT 7.4. This includes models as far back as certain G4s, but not earlier than that. Full system requirements are on Digi's site. They are well known for very thorough prerelease vetting of compatible hardware, and for very clear documentation on it.

PTLE upgrade is $150, HD is $250. It includes a wealth of new features, plugins and VI's. It's the biggest PT upgrade since v5, and arguably ever. It's fabulous (I have PT8 HD). Don't hesitate as long as your system is ready for it.

Enjoy!

Just ran into a colleague at one of the cable network companies (my old haunt). They have the PT8 upgrade (HD), but have not installed it in any of their 5 DAW rooms yet. He said something about lots of bugs, especially for post work, that are causing systems to crash and are (if I understood him correctly) even causing damage to control surfaces like the Command8 and Control24. Even the newly-available CS isn't fixing much of it. He recommended hanging onto the upgrades until they release an 8.1.

Anyone else heard about these issues?

No problems here, but I've been using it mainly for music.

I also should have noted before that many plugins need to be upgraded for PT8/Leopard. Those ended costing me a lot more than the upgrade itself. Waves Platiinum alone was $450, and that was a "special" discount from $600. Ouch....

Well yes on the Mac side it's semi streight forward but the OP didn't say if he was on a Mac. On a PC it's a bunch more complicated since it isn't possible to test all the various systems out there. Even on a Mac you can have issues since a lot of people have things in the system that are not "officially" supported. Sometimes upgrading makes that SCSI card or extra video card that worked fine before cause problems. Digi is good (some might say over zealous) in not saying system X is compatible till it's been heavily tested. Unfortunately if you have that odd plugin, controller, card that isn't explicitly sanctioned or low on their priority list it can take awhile for your system to be OK'd. Usually it will work and if there is a problem it's not a huge deal to find the problem bur sometimes....

On the up side I haven't seen a lot of outraged posts in the post community, so to speak. So probably the problems are limited to a few specific configurations. With Digi it's rarely a bad thing to not be on the bleeding edge.

I'm running an 8-core Mac Pro with Leopard 10.5.6

PT LE 8 runs beeeeeeeeautifully! However, a LOT of my sample libraries need updates to their RTAS/VST crud. That's going to cost a bit...but my oh my it's going to be so worth it. Pro Tools has finally gotten in the now like Cubase and Logic. Now, if only I could run stuff through my computer speakers so I'm not using headphones all the time. Sigh...

I'm running PT8 on a 4-core Mac Pro, and it too runs great.....most of the time. I've been getting crashes on occasion, where the whole system freezes, while the audio continues to play on into oblivion.

Other than that I LOVE it, I use it for both post, and music (with Reason).
