F5: Pro Res & DnxHD announced for the F's!

ProRes is limited to 1080p, isn't it?

Too bad they don't have a board upgrade for the F3. I'd be all aboard an upgrade to the F3 in onboard 4.2.2. It's my only reason for an external recorder. I'd pay good money for that if it worked with S-Log.
Sony announced future upgrades for the F3, but I haven't seen any recently.

i think Sony sees support for the F3 as undermining their F5/55 marketing.

I wouldn't expect to see any enhancements for the F3.

ProRes is resolution independent. The Blackmagic 4K camera, as a case in point, currently records ProRes HQ at 1080p or 3840x2160 24p. ProRes files sizes will be greater than XAVC. Sony needed to add ProRes not because it was a superior codec but because it is a standard workflow. And Alexa and Amira are both ProRes.

Imagine how versatile the F5/55 can now be with all of those codec possibilities.

If they can squeeze 12-bit ProRes on to the cameras, it definitely makes it harder to mount a case for investing in the Amira - though ergonomically and operationally the new Arri does look like the finest digital cinema cinema camera ever made IMO (and imagery from that lovely Alev sensor is still the benchmark by which all others are judged).

I really should steer clear of these threads - they get me thinking dangerously expensive thoughts.

Duke, we will have to go the F5 route I'm afraid. Think of it this way, the F3 will make the a great B camera to the F5 at 1080p.

It could be possible with this upgrade the F5 gets a way to record in 4k now that is no longer only RAW. F5 owners have been asking for 4k XAVC for a while, maybe this will address it.

I'm still a little butt hurt about this. They teased an upgrade, now it seems they aren't interested in throwing their loyal f3 users a bone.

Its the Sony way - screw you. Disappointing - yes.
They can't even be bothered to give us S-Log2

I'm liking this, I think Sony should be able to make the F3 10bit internal too, if they can do it on the PMW-300, they can do it on the F3. I would pay too, haha. I would also like 2K as it's supposed to be a 35mm movie camera!

I remember on DVINFO, we were asked to email Sony with all the future upgrades we would like on the F3, we didn't get anything really, they put everything we asked in to the F$/F$$, I was very disappointed http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-xdcam-f3-cinealta/509734-wish-list-future-firmware-updates.html

Why not email them and ask? production@am.sony.com

I'd head to the Sony F3 forums specifically and make some noise about it. It does seem largely that development stopped for the F3 once the F5/F55 (The New F's) were announced.

At least they should provide some official answers, for example if in their opinion F3 is EOL, etc.. not that to hear that will help, but in a way at least it would be good to know.

I'm sure many would pay Sony the price of a PIX 240i, if Sony would give us Pro Res internal recording on the F3.

I don't think that would be a good idea Dennis, I like Sony products, and I wouldn't want to upset myself, and waste my time by asking for something we know Sony won't do. We all know the F3 was designed with a external recorder in mind (SR-R1) and I can get what I want with either the PIX 240i, or 7Q. I would like the 2K output though, I'm sure this could be done with firmware.

Sony should expect this though! Sony should not just look after one customer, Sony should look after all customers. In business, you should treat all customers the same.

how's that old buddhist story go about the scorpion in the river...?

Sony does what Sony does, don't expect them to be something they are decidedly not.

how's that old buddhist story go about the scorpion in the river...?

Sony does what Sony does, don't expect them to be something they are decidedly not.

One morning, after he had finished his meditation, the old man opened his eyes and saw a scorpion floating helplessly in the water. As the scorpion was washed closer to the tree, the old man quickly stretched himself out on one of the long roots that branched out into the river and reached out to rescue the drowning creature. As soon as he touched it, the scorpion stung him. Instinctively the man withdrew his hand. A minute later, after he had regained his balance, he stretched himself out again on the roots to save the scorpion. This time the scorpion stung him so badly with its poisonous tail that his hand became swollen and bloody and his face contorted with pain. At that moment, a passerby saw the old man stretched out on the roots struggling with the scorpion and shouted: "Hey, stupid old man, what's wrong with you? Only a fool would risk his life for the sake of an ugly, evil creature. Don't you know you could kill yourself trying to save that ungrateful scorpion?" The old man turned his head. Looking into the stranger's eyes he said calmly, "My friend, just because it is the scorpion's nature to sting, that does not change my nature to save."

I posted many times on the Sony forums asking about an upgrade and it is completely 100% ignored. I even sent direct messages to Peter Crithary. Nothing.

I say we blow up that email address. If enough loyal F3 users make enough noise, maybe we can at least get some closure. Who knows maybe they'll throw us Slog2 or something. (I can't believe they didn't at least just give us that...I mean it's a freaking gamma curve, for crying out loud...haha)

Why not test it out here first? If we can get 20+ people to email, all the same day, then I'm in. So who wants 2K? S-Log 2? HDCAM SR? ProRes? XAVC? Access to the R5? Access to the viewfinders for the F5/55? Remember it may cost as it would be hardware for the 10bit codecs. No, I've just invented the F3R!

I think Dennis is on to something. Not a petition in the tradition sense but a reasonable list of things we would like to see in the camera that would not take a lot of development time and have names of people listed in the request.

NAB is coming up and one of us or a bunch of us could go en masse to the Sony booth and chat up Peter C. and present him with the signed request. Email bombing him I think would be annoying him. Bring some humanity into it by talking to him as a respectful group at NAB might get some traction with him and the people he talks to at Sony Professional.

We should take this into a separate thread.

I think that is a great idea, although I can't go to NAB to chat him up :D I live in the U.K.

Whatever you all think is best, I'm in.
