Prism Video Converter

Anyone on this board ever try the Prism Video Converter? It's free like Mpeg Streamclip but outputs AVI files and you don't need the Avid codec. Did a search here and nothing came up so I thought I'd ask before trying it myself.

I've been using it for some time. Works well.

When I want .MOV output I use StreamClip. When I want AVI I use Prism. Two big things to note:

1. You will still need an effective codec to encode to. AVI is just a container like MOV and can house dozens and dozens of codecs. So choose well.

2. Prism has both a paid version and a free one. On NCH's webpage there is a single link for the free one, and about a dozen places to click to get the paid one. So choose carefully. If you choose properly, you download prismsetup.exe. If you get the wrong one you get prismPsetup.exe.

Best of luck.

Not only that .. the link to the free version is masked in html so you can't see it! You have to look at the html page source to find it.

Thanks... I downloaded it from Cnet and it appears to be the free version. In my research I recall seeing a post from a Prism user who recommended the best codec to use but of course now I can't find that info. I'm hoping when I see the choices in Prism it will jog my memory. I think it started with an "L".

Lagarith is what you're thinking of. But "best" is elusive. Best at what is the question. Lagarith is a HORRIBLE playback codec. But it's lossless, so if you have to do some further manipulation, it's pretty darn good for that.

Thanks... that was the "L" word I was thinking of, although I didn't see it listed as an option when I downloaded Prism. I tried several of the codecs listed and all still required rendering in CS3. I was hoping that Premiere would take the Prism avi files and play them without rendering as it does other avi files. If I have to render the files after importing I might as well stick with Streamclip.

Prism doesn't "have" any AVI codecs. It just accesses the ones already installed in your system. If you have codecs on your system that Premiere can work with without rendering, then Prism should be able to access them, and you can render to them.
