Printing to tape. Which is better..deck, 100b, or cheap camcorder?

Is there a big difference in quality if I print to tape to a cheap camcorder or an expensive deck or to my 100b. Or because it is over firewire direct from my fcp then all is equal?

You are correct with your 2nd statement. It's a DV signal over firewire to a DV deck, what camera/deck you used not matter at all.

The only time camera really matters is, well, as a camera.

The expensive deck only makes a difference if you need frame accuracy. If you're delivering to a broadcaster and your show needs to start at a given TC then you'll want RS-422 to ensure frame accuracy. But just for screening or archival purposes you should be okay.

cheers.

Hijack alert. How does this work with 24p and 24pa? Does the DVX have to be in the correct shooting mode?

24P and PA ONLY matter when you are generating material - so either shooting or active elements in post liek animation and transitions.

They do not matter one bit when recording to tape. The NLE will always spit out valid DV from teh firewire port (the settings for which however do matter and vary beteen NLEs..)

Mikko,

So if I was to capture 24pa footage, edit in a 23.98 timeline, print to tape (with the DVX at any setting), and then capture the edited footage again... that footage will be 24pa?

I was looking for a lossless way to work between Mac and PC without having to convert file formats. I'm doing some effects (on my Mac) for a short that is being edited in Premiere. I was thinking that I could have them print the specific clips to tape, I could capture those clips, print the finished effects clips back to tape, and then they could capture the clips into Premiere. So after all of that, the footage should still be 24pa?

I don't know about the specfics of 24P handling in NLEs, so I dont' know for sure. Hopfully someone with the info will reply.

Okay, what if I did it all on a steadicam?:)

Thanks Mikko. I should probably just test it out I suppose.

Going TO tape, if you're recording on set, or outputing from NLE, the DVX will still record a standard NTSC-DV signal, 60i. I transfer stuff back and forth from PCs often and use Flip4Mac for those you can't read or write QT files. The compression loss is the same if you go to tape or save as a file. It has to do the same re-compression either way.
