Print to tape for HVX

I tried to discreetly ask this on the technical board, but nobody bit, so here goes:

I'm having a hard time finding the right combo of settings to dub HD footage back out the camera's DV deck. The manuals for FCP, the HVX, and the Apple FCP/HVX white sheet all suggest this is possible and I want to use HD downrezzed to SD for the video blog projects i am prepaing for a new national magazine launch. Since I'll be compressing so much anyway for web streaming, I want to start with the beautiful SD image I anticipate receiving, rather than spending hours with Compressor reducing the (mostly 720) HD direct to streaming sized QT Movie files.

Anyway, I've been following the printed instructions and coming up with no action.

Does anyone know what settings I should be using to get the footage back into the camera during tape mode for record button-dubbing over firewire from FCP?

Or am I going about this all wrong?

Thanks in advance!

PS: My god I love the footage this camera is giving me...

I don't believe this is possible without extra dedicated hardware. You can only do this within the camera from your P2 to DV tape.

Are you tring to down res to DV from the P2 card? Not sure I understand what you are trying to do. If so, let us know, that is pretty simple.

Best,

Jan

I think bgundu's right. From FCP, you have to send it back to the P2 card first, then down-res that from the P2 card to the DV deck in-camera. To go directly out from FCP to DV would require additional hardware (I think?). Jan, is this correct?

Jan, do let us know! How do you downconvert from P2 to dv, in camera? Can I edit a comercial in 1080P, export back to P2, and then Downconvert in camera to DV?

I have been able to re-copy the lastclip.txt and all the stuff from the contents card back to P2. How or what would you copy from the FCP timeline back to P2??

I believe you can downconvert only the 720P to DV in camera and not 1080 stuff. To copy back to P2 Barry mentioned this:

You can. I haven't tried it on my Mac, since I haven't even set the Mac up yet(!) but I am 99% sure you can do this, because I can do it on my Avid system.

I think the key is that people need to turn off the thumbnail screen. When in MCR mode, turn off the thumbnails and then you'll see a blue screen reminiscent of the DVX in VCR mode. Firewire output from the computer, and input to the HVX, should show up on the LCD now, and you can press the VCR/MCR "record" buttons on top of the camera and record to the P2 card. FCP wouldn't need to convert to MXF or anything; it just has to stream out the firewire via AV/C protocol, and FCP has been able to do that since version 4.5.

To downcovert in your NLE is not that big of a deal. (To me anyway)

Put the P2/Tape switch in "tape" mode, then enter the PC/DUB mode and it'll bring up a menu that lets you select clips and choose which ones you want to downconvert.

Yes.

not to sure what you are trying to do either.. I have rendered out 720p HVX files from FCP to DV to make proxies since day one.

Yes.

Thanks Barry. 1080p can be downconverted to dv too? That's great news! I believe that's what I'm going to do with the footage I shoot when I get the camera, for proxies.

Hi,

You cannot write back to the P2 card except with the Canopus system. If that was part of the first question then I really blew it, I didn't get that at all. You can from the p2 original down convert to DV.

Thanks,

Jan

Yes.
Page 86 in the HVX Manual gives you step by step instructions.
I back up all my footage to DVCam + Lacie HDrive.

So, I have to downconvert anyway to DV format before using print to tape function in FCP...? That doesn't solve the problem for me...

I'll try Barry's suggestion for copying back to the P2 card and dubbing out internally to the incamera tape deck from there. I just don't want to have to dub in the field, stopping everything. I'd rather save the footage to disc and then dub it later at home.

I basically am finding compression times horrible on my PB (1.67 ghz, 7200 rpm notwithstanding), 5-8 hours per hour of footage, and I'm thinking that spending an hour real-time dubbing down to DV tape might be a faster way to move into a SD size workflow. Perhaps I'm making mistakes using the new Compressor software, but i havn't figured out why the long render times...Been paying close attention to framerates, ect...

This time spent downrezzing is my only workflow headache so far. P2 aquisition, card slot transfer, and FCP managing of the footage has all gone like butter.

Not sure that we're on the same boat. are you asking about transfering from p2 to tape in the camera or the timeline. FCP, Edius, Avid?
I use Edius Broadcast and transfer back to the p2 card then transfer to dv in the camera. The only way I can transfer back to dv is to bring the footage in to Edius as DV and then export back to tape.

In the am tomorrow I will be shooting for Tyson Foods and will shoot the HVX in DV mode. Not Broadcast but for in house training. This footage will look better than the FX1 that I sold or my old DVX100. I have 33 hours on my HVX and 50 % was shot in DV.

Thanks Mule...I am fine with getting p2 to dub to the tape deck when the original data is on the cards. I am not able to get the camera to recognise timeline or print to tape output. I turn the thumbs off and get the required blue screen, but it reads nothing that I send at it. I am suspecting my issue may be in the FCP settings. I'm also going to try just copying the raw files back to the card in PC mode and see if i can dub that way.

North Wilkesboro...cool, I spend half my time in Marshall/Asheville area, half in NYC.
