Primer

Probably my favourite low budget movie ever.

It brought time travel from the realms of fantasy or comedy to a believable drama, something which should have been done a long time ago. For $6000 you have to hand it to the guy.

Cool movie, and admirably done, but the six grand isn't taking into consideration the fee for development and transfer so his budget is misleading.

It's just like El Mariachi's budget, where the movie you saw in theaters was actually more like $300,000. but still, in both examples for $7000 in the end each guy had a movie shot on 16mm, even if he didnt have a film print.

And personally I've always felt Mariachi was over rated. If it wasnt made for $7000 I dont think any of us would have heard of it. Primer on the other hand I think stands on it's own.

El Mariachi is really some of the worst crap. It take Primer over it 10 out of 10 times. I'm not a fan of RR at all....and his book infuriated me at times.

i turned El Mariachi off... either that or ive forgotten most of it.. :-0 Primer I've seen at least three times, more watching again with the commentary on.

I did hear rumours that Mr carruth hasn't made another film simply because he refuses to compromise anything for a studio. I hope he manages to get something else made soon.

As an aspriing low budget film-maker I get really excited when I see someone take on something that isnt horror or mumblecore. Certainly time travel isn't an obvious choice to do with no money, but he made that whole low-fi thing work for the film. Its almost the reverse of rodriguez where he tried to emulate hollywood on a low budget. Primer is just what it is and no matter what the budget was, it would still be the same story and probably look very similar. you cant see him remaking it just because Hollywood throws more money at it, that's what I dig about it.

El Mariachi was entertaining, especially for the budget.

I love RR. His enthusiasm and support for struggling filmmakers is a rarity in the pool of Hollywood hotshots. I cannot think of another director that seems genuinely interested in sharing tips and knowledge on filmmaking and encouraging filmmakers to really do it.

I do not think he has the skills of a great director, but his work has grown from project to project with Sin City and Planet Terror being my two favs.

THE guy is practically his own studio; writing, shooting directing editing and scoring his own films. That's a dream life.

Primer was pretty cool, but I find it vastly overrated.

i didn't mean to put down RR. Sin City is one of my favorite flicks and I'll read anything he writes. I'm just really not a fan of Mariachi. Although I've watched the commentary track more times than I can remember :)

There was no development fee, and he spent 30k for a 35mm transfer once it had been accepted to screen at sundance. EL MARIACHI had over a mil spent on getting it into theatres. PRIMER was therefore both a much better achievement, IMO.

very well made. It's sad that Shane hasn't made a new project yet. His agent just left William Morris, so we'll see if that gets him any pull
