Other: Pride Parade Highlights with the Z750

I shot a Pride parade in Orlando a couple of weeks ago for stock footage. Later I decided I had enough material to cut together a little highlights video for the event organizers. Nothing fancy, but they loved it. The Z750 is still the only camera to offer the 4K XAVC-L200 codec, which I've been very impressed with. 200 Mbps for 4K 10-bit 4:2;2 @ 60 fps is a pretty lightweight codec that holds up nicely to grading.

Sony PXW-Z750
Fujinon 24x7.8 lens
4K - XAVC-L200 @ 60 fps
S-LOG3
Graded in DaVinci Resolve
Edited in Adobe Premiere

Lovely work and great sense of being there.

I notice there’s a vignette across almost all of the cut. It’s also changing the colour in some areas like the sign at 55 seconds, sky at 59 seconds.

Is this from a post effect / Grade? Or from in-camera?

Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated.

Yes, there is a quick and dirty vignette applied to every shot, plus its all a little oversaturated to add some punchiness. That's what you're seeing at 55 and 59, plus a few other places where the vignette didn't work too good on light backgrounds.. I could have gone back and fixed thiose clips, but I didn't want to put the effort into it. Too lazy. I guess that's the difference between doing something for a client and just for the heck of it. I'll render the dozen or so clips that I'll submit for stock footage without any vignette - but with the oversatured colors. That sells.

I gotta say this shoot proved without a doubt that I'm no spring chicken anymore, had to come home and take a nap. Pretty wild parade though with everyone having a good time. I'm glad I went.

Great stuff again, Doug. Your choice of subject, angle, timing etc are just right IMHO. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Takumarr, I got my Z750 in the spring of 2020. Three years later. it is still Sony's flagship 2/3" camcorder and far more advanced than anything that came before it -- from Sony or any other manufacturer. The only camera that comes close to matching the Z750 is Sony's own Z450. Yes, there is stil a strong demand for 2/3" cameras for news, sports, documentaries, and reality shows. And Sony basically owns the whole market. Survivor and Amazing Race were earlier adopters of the Z750. There will be dozens of 750s working for OBS at the Paris Olympics next summer. I know that the CBC (Canada) and NBC both just recently bought dozens of Z750s as they transitionin over to the Z750 and FX6 as their workhorse cameras.

There will always be a market for 2/3" shoulder-mount ENG cameras.

Thanks for your explanation, I thought 2/3 cameras were stop production! very informative...

Not even close. They still absolutely dominate TV. One of the strongest features of 2/3” is the sweet spot that it puts it in for lenses. No other sensor size has the amount of zoom lenses with the range and versatility, which is paramount for the types of productions that these types of cameras are used for.

I’ve never been out of the 2/3” world, even though I own at least four large sensor cameras, but I’ve experienced a large resurgence in 2/3” production (mostly live) in my business. I’ve actually bought two additional 2/3” broadcast cameras in the last six months.

Guess what? Another parade. Surprise, surprise. This time I shot with my FX6 and 24-70mm. I shot a veterans day parade in 2019 with a demo FX9 and that stock footage has done very, very well (actually more than enough to pay for an FX9). Hopefully lightning will strike twice.
