Pricing

Avid still sticks by its high prices, even in the midst of struggling with the very competitive Final Cut Pro. What strategy is Avid taking in doing this? Perhaps they already have all the high-end clients they need and feels no need to approach the consumer market?

Xpress Pro and Final Cut studio are basically the same price. Which one is a better value is subjective.

When Avids first came out they were 80-100K. Thanks Avid for making them available to most people. Where else can you bill $150-$200/Hr for such a small investment?

I have a feeling that eventually Xpress Pro will just "go away" and become Media Composer. I think that would be the best strategy for the company.

I am using FCP because of the horrid support for the HD100 (which apparntly still will not get resolved, some "coming soon" this has been - NAB will be the 2 Year Mark) but would much rather cut on the Avid. So yes, it is very subjective as to which is a better value, when you have the option of choice.

I completely agree. One of FCP's biggest strengths is that it's not segmented. One piece of software completely unlocked and only limited by your system or what hardware you plug into it. I'd personally love to see Avid boil down to Media Composer and Nitris and get rid of everything else. But the odds are pretty low.

What are your reasons to choose Avid over FCP?

The reasons really refer to two things. Media Management and Easy of Cutting. I just seem to work faster in Avid. But I have to say, that the more I work in FCP, the more I am setting it up like I do in Avid, so it is getting to be roughly the same. Another nice thing about FCP is that you can mix Frame Rates, although it requires rendering, this is a nice feature.

I've been editing on avid since 1991.

I now own a production company and have 1 Media Composer ( software) with Mojo, and 2 FCPro systems.

I PREFER cutting on Avid since it has better media management and I'm faster at it.

But the FCPro systems handle the DVCProHD 720Pn 23.98 footage much better.

If Apple comes out with a better means of media management at NAB this year with FCPro 6, Avid WILL be in trouble.

I prefer MC because the speed you can cut is flat out insane.
I worked on FCP for about 8 months. Learned as many short cut keys as possible and got pretty fast at cutting on FCP. I think if I worked on FCP for a fews years I could get even faster. But even then it wouldn't be as fast as cutting on a MC. FCP does some cool things but the speed of cutting isn't one of them.
