Price of HD monitors

Just curious about this as I don't know a lot (or any) of the technical details of putting together a HD LCD monitor, but I had this question. Hopefully someone can drop some knowledge on me.

How can a company offer a 42 inch TV with 1080p HDMI support for $500, yet it costs significantly more in most cases for a 5.6inch 1280x800 HDMI monitor for film and video applications?

Quantity?

From what I've heard it is more so to do with the cost of manufacturing LCDS of the size, with pixel densities that high. I believe it costs a lot more to cram 1920x1080 on something 5.6" big, because all the tech has to be smaller and therefore more expensive. Case and point - apple sells millions of iphone 4s, yet it only has 960x640, so its not a quantity issue. It also has to do with the processing power to show that much information on a screen, and being able to fit all that in there.

I think the answer is both of the above - quantity of sales and relatively higher expense of manufacturing such high pixel densities.

Plus the fact that cinema people are already used to overpaying for everything.
