Previewing P2 footage in FCP is choppy

ah, well, no it's not daisy chained.

the external drive the p2 footage is on has only about 100GB of space left though.

i'll try importing it from another drive and see if that makes a difference.

I had to look this up because I'm not familiar, other than knowing of its existence, with the P2 device. However it looks like in order to work with the mxf formated data, a 'transcoding' operation has to occur to bring it into FCP. There was mention on a wiki article about a software package MXF4QT which did the transcoding as well...

Anyway, going back to your system, it seems a bit underpowered to be reading HD material off of the P2 device, transcoding, saving to output device (scratch disk), and displaying it at the same time.

When I compress something for display on a computer, I usually try to keep under 10 Mbs, because while someone may have a higherspeed system, often many people don't so the result is 'jerky playback'. And it should be obvious, that's not HD...

I believe that FCP and QT unwrap the mxf files and rewrap them in QT.

No transcoding really, if that is the correct name, because the image quality is identical as is the file size FTMP

ya know what, i think i'm gonna buy a new damn computer next week, lol. i need more power anyway.

That's the spirit... drive the old beater for years beyond its useful life... tell the wife who wants a useless diamond ring to take a hike, live in a hovel... but appoint said hovel with the highest technology you can buy... what's more, when you do get your break, and do make those millions, the wife will return... with a court order for support because of how much she contributed to your career success... (that's called dramatic irony...)

ya me neither. new mac with more power works perfect though, no more choppy playback, made sure i got lots more processor and memory.....
