Preview on CRT TV

I want to use an old CRT television as a external monitor for Vegas preview window, but i realy can't figure out how to set it up.
My graphic card is Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. It has S-Video output. My TV has SCART input. So I bought a cable with S-Video and SCART connectors.
I connected my TV with graphic card.
In Display Properties in Windows I see two monitors, but I dont see anything on the TV screen.

Try clicking the little TV in the video preview window or (Alt+Shift+4). It's labelled "Video Preview on External Monitor" via pop-up balloon.

I tried this already, but nothing happens - it only displays preview in full screen on my PC monitor. There is nothing on TV.

So I tried to connect another TV with S-Video/RCA cable. I can now at least expand my desktop to this TV. But the "video preview on external monitor" function doesnt work. I could only drag the preview window to the TV monitor.

This isn't how you want to display on a CRT monitor. You want to go out through firewire to your camera or an A/D converter, then through that to the TV. Then, you will have a signal which is meant for a TV on the TV.

Otherwise, you're viewing something meant for a computer screen on your TV, and you'll get an inaccurate view of what you're doing. Computer resolution and color response are very different from a TV's. The whole point of previewing to a TV is to see what your product will look like ON a TV when it's done.

I see. And what about connection with LCD HD TV?

And what about LCD TVs with digital tuner?

BTW - is there a A/D converter below $150? I was looking at bhphotovideo.com and this things are very expensive :)

The digital tuner won't come into play; that's just for pulling signal of the air.

Best way to connect to an LCD HDTV would be through a dedicated card, like an AJA Xena (DVI, HDMI, or component) or a Blackmagic Intensity (HDMI). You can also connect by HDMI through a graphics card.

But for SD stuff, connecting through firewire/cam or converter/S-Video would still be the best for judging your final product.

I agree. The link below shows me using a DV converter. I coud connect it to an HD LCD monitor but you will only get 720 X 480 resolution. A Decklink card would be better.

Thanks for explanation, David! Could you please recommend me some cheap converter for this? (I'm exporting mostly to SD. Sometimes to HD, but only for the internet and therefore computer screens).

Your camera will do just fine; even better if it has S-Video out.

I have Canon HV20 which has only DV/HDV and HDMI out. And my CRT TV has only SCART in.

The camera will work just fine. My converter does happen to have S-Video and component along with composite. I think you might have composite rather than component.
