Pretty sure...but just in case...

Hey all,

I purchased a used DVX100 off ebay and everything appears fine except one thing. I am totally new to cameras so I just want to be sure I'm not missing something. There are two rings on the camera--one of which is the zoom ring and the other is the focus ring. The zoom ring appears to work fine. When I have servo turned off I can only zoom out manually however. Is that normal?

That isn't the big problem however. I can turn the focus ring round and round without any resistance (possibly normal) BUT it does absolutely nothing to change the focus. Now, I was reading that using Scene file 6 in 24PA (progressive) would take away autofocus--so then I switched to Scene file 4 and turned on auto focus and it worked just fine. So, I can autofocus, but the ring still appears to do nothing. I have switched it from Manual to Auto a few times to no effect.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help guys!

zoom ring: yes that is completely normal. it allows you to zoom at different speeds that the auto zoom doesnt allow you to control as accurately.

Focus: Its it also fine. to blur something you have to spin the ring a few times to see some dramatic changes - the best way you can check forsure if its working is by setting up a close object to the lens, and anything in the background. set the camera down and have it on auto focus with both object in frame, once the camera if focused on the near object, switch to manual and spin the ring. if the near object because even the slightest bit blurry, then your fine

This is a bit obvious but don't try to move the manual focus ring when its in servo mode. I'll damage the camcorder.

DVX Kid: Ok, I will try that.

Kevtim: Yeah, I was reading that in the dvx book...I really hope I didn't damage it...
