Pretend I'm stupid - why is this RED announcement so huge?

You could wait for the RED (if it happens) or you can continue shooting with the JVC until that point and decide when. You can not wait for things to come out now. Its like an iPOD a 1gb comes out and you wait and wait for the 8gb then you get it then the 16gb comes on the next week. Its just a guessing game.

I say wait as long as you possibly can. Why buy before you need to? Something better or greater will always come along. Wait until you need it, and when you NEED it, then you can't wait any longer, so you get the best that's available at that time.

If there is no harm in waiting, then that's a good idea. Wait :)

I think the proper way to phrase the question would be:

"On a purely speculative basis, based on the given specs thus far, which of the new RED Scarlets would be able sit next to a 35mm camera on a Hollywood set and achieve the most comparable image?"

And with that, I'd go with the S35 Scarlet, PL mount. That's under 10 grand for the brain. For glass...you'll probably be better off renting. And I have no idea how much all the required modules are going to cost either. But the beauty of the DSMC system is that you can rent whatever module you need, instead of having to rent a new camera system, or buy every module. Things are going to change a bit more in the coming months, I'd think, so nobody can really give you an accurate assessment right now.

Thanks guys. Well, I guess I'll be a waiting like everyone else...

Saw MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D yesterday - which was shot w/ a RED - and was impressed. Def some "video-ish" looking shots, but on the whole, it looked very film like.

The color and resolution looked very film like. One question though - can/will the new RED line-up shoot 2:35 to 1 aspect ratio? VALENTINE looked to be your standard 16:9 ratio.

Or is this merely a function of the glass/post process?

The latest specs stated that you could shoot or crop for 2:35.1 and of course you can always do that in post as well.

. . . I'm crazy, but I've operated a RED ONE on a dolly with one foot, camera tilt with my right hand AND pulled focus with my left on Nikon lenses . . . It's very very difficult to imagine yourself doing these things until you actually do them and practice. You begin to realize just how much you CAN do despite what other people "think" you can not . . . Once you put your hands on an adapter + cam and use it a lot you realize what you can do with it all by your lonesome.

I hear ya. In fact, the few times I've had real camera assistants I've felt totally spoiled!
