Panasonic just distributed this press release...
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ideo-series-pilot-with-ag-af100-hd-cinema-cam

I don't know Rich Lerner or know if he's a member of the forum, but hey, it's nice to see a major company raising awareness of their users by issuing a worldwide press release.

So, come on, you guys -- do something amazing, do something high-profile, and let's get the Panasonic PR machine to issue press releases for what you're out there doing too!

Good to see the AF100 moving further into actual use rather than the world of camera tests we've been in!

I'm starting prodution in a bit over a week on "Mandie and the Forgotten Christmas," a feature length project with the AF100. It will be released to retail this fall and continues a series that began on the HVX200 (trailer), with a second installment shot on a 7D (trailer), and now a third installment on the AF100!

This will be our 12th project since starting out with the goold old DVX100 in 2003! Our "7D" phase was simply because I couldn't stand the bulk of the HVX+35mm adapter any longer, so I jumped to the 7D for 2010.

Panasonic has come through for us many times over the years, so I'm genuinely excited to put the AF100 to work for the next couple of months.

And Barry: I bought a 2k mole softbox from you several years ago on here when you offered it for sale for a song. It has been put to almost constant use on every production. It's kind of my Barry Green good luck charm!

that is really exciting, thanks for sharing. i just filmed some coverage of a little music video shoot for a client (oddly enough the 7d's were used as A cams, only because thats their proven workflow, and what was booked), needless to say the footage is great. i have yet to use the camera with an interesting environment, and properly setting it up and the images are wonderful (i think i said that already=] ).

it is great to see this camera so vastly used by independent users and professionals alike.

Great to see that someone who won an Emmy for "Nature" bought this cam with doc work in mind. All whining about how the camera only works well in controlled situations should point back to here.

That video of Lisa Downing, I'm sorry but I think it looked awful and tacky in almost every aspect I can think of: framing, camera movement, colors, edit, color grading, lighting etc. only the last shot I thought was pretty. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh and I wasn't expecting to see a masterpiece or even sth great for sth that has obviously been put together quickly, but I just felt like watching a mediocre, tasteless, boring home video shot on a 4 year old HDV camcorder. I don't think it showed any of the AF100/M4/3 strong points and all the other , in my opinion, shortcomings like the cheesy overlays, B&W switching, lack of pace , weird soft/diffusion like effects, weird color casts, ugly framing etc made everything scream "bad home video" and I feel didn't do any justice to the camera.... just what I felt, please don't bury me:)

Rich has been in the business longer than you have been alive.
Maybe after you graduate from school and have a basic working knowledge you will be better equipped to critique someone else's work.

All the Best!

Dave

Neither a degree or x years in the business are required to have an opinion on someone's work. Years in don't make you above criticism either. His critique was cleanly stated and not a personal attack. As Jan said, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.

That too! I'm convinced everything would be better with a little love, courtesy of Mr. Garrett.

I respect your opinions. I watched the video again in HD on a callibrated fullHD monitor but I still stand by what I said. Mr David Jones, I was expressing my opinion, and I don't think it's fair of you to make assumptions about who I am, and assume that I don't have a basic working knowledge. Personally I am not aware of Mr. Lerner's body of work and I am sure you were right about him being in business longer than I've been alive since I'll be 19 in 3 days, but I fail to see how the proportionality between my age and Mr. Lerner's years in business has anything to do with how well equipped or not I am to critique. You are free not to share my opinion but the sarcasm is a bit unfair. Some of my truly favorite painters are Picasso, Bacon and Rothko for instance, but I dislike the work of Salvador Dali, Frida Calo,Kandinsky and Chagall. I think David Lynches Blue Velvet was amazing but I hated Inland Empire despite his reasoning behind artistic choices; am I not equipped to criticize art that I don't like unless I am a Bergmann or if I have a PhD ? I thought Inception was an absolute masterpiece, I thought Gamer was one of the worst movies I have seen. There are times when the best critique for me on my art has come from 10 year olds, involving a lot of unfettered emotion and swearing. Anyways, I hope I haven't sidetracked this thread but I couldn't not comment on Mr. Jones comment. I would be curious if there is anyone who agrees with me on my previous post.

thanks,

Stefanos

Stefanos I too did not like the music video overall. In my opinion it seemed too "cheezy" for some of the editing parts as well as the angles. The motion was okay though...
To be honest I was expecting something "more" based on the reputation of the cinematographer and maybe it will appeal to a different type of audience than you or me but in the end our opinion is our opinion :)

Well spoken. My opinion (for whatever it's worth) is that any critique is valid if the critic states their reasoning -which you did very well.

I happen to agree with you on this particular video. I couldn't sit through to the end though. However, in all fairness, sometimes "cheesy" is what the client wants and I, for one, can't force a whole lot of art into a bad concept.

...Not trying to add fuel to the fire, but I have to agree with Stefanos's opinion on this Lisa Downing video. ( I am sure Rich put a lot of effort in to making this video )

Though I completely disagree with Stefano's assessment of Salvador Dali, Frida Calo, Kandinsky, and Chagall.

I was completely underwhelmed by Nolan's "Inception". I found it to be artistically boring and far too conventional considering that these "psychological worlds" were taking place inside of someones imagination.

I hated the length and editing of Lynch's "Inland Empire", but even bad Lynch is still a pretty fun ride.

I was also underwhelmed by Aronofsky's "Black Swan" and wish that one of the magic "Davids" had directed it instead. ( David Cronenberg, David Fincher, David Lynch ) I also would have loved to have seen "Inception" directed by any of these severely talented film-makers.

I agree with you that clients sometimes want cheesy and that it's difficult forcing art into a bad concept, and I would never have even bothered leaving my first comment if I had come across this video on vimeo entitled "Another AF100 test video",
but I responed because I was quite surprised that this video , if I understand correctly, is affiliated in some way with the advertisement of Panasonic's Af100 and, I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but sth a lot better. And I respect Ms. Jan's different taste, but I can't change who I am. Anyways

It is totally cool to have differing opinions, it doesn't dismiss the value of the work. As an example, everyone here really loved Philip Blooms Turin Brakes. I didn't necessarily care for the music, and other than watching the way that Philip controlled the camera, it was hard to listen to, for me. ANd I will likely include some of Philip's music video in our NAB video loop. Why? because it obviously appeals to someone other than me and I need to make as broad of a sweep as possible on the video loop.

Point is, I like the way that Rich handled the exposure of the clouds and yes, the cheezy overlays, I am a bit of a romantic, and I thought the music to be really beautiful. So the point of Rich's exercise was to get paid, and he pleased his client and most likely the target audience for the music.

Have a great weekend guys and gals,

Jan

haha, TheDingo, I think it's better if we continue the discussion on the other artists outside this thread cause it'll get severely sidetracked, maybe I shouldn't have brought up my other artistic preferences, but I wanted to say that noone is beyond reproach , apart from Tarkovsky, the late Bach and DaVinci/Picasso;) just kidding
