-Press Release- Avid is planning future changes!

Good for them. Avid can easily compete with any other system out there if they would make a few crucial changes. I just hope they're willing to really make a difference.

Something had to give and this was long overdue. And I say this as an Avid user and supporter. I hope the changes create some big and wonderful waves.

Something will change - they've acknowledged that something MUST change and they've done it publicly so the market will expect to see the changes.
They've said they will reach out to their higher end "enterprise" customers and find a way to make some of the lower end products profitable.

And yes, they will continue to loose market share to Apple :)

Is there a stat report that shows us what percentage of theatrical movies (per given year) were cut with what app?

Interesting. At DMF all the buzz was about how Avid pulled out of the NAB show, and people were saying that hey, that amounts to basically admitting defeat (the Avid vs. Apple booth war was always a talked-about moment).

But then I thought about how Panasonic pulled out of Europe's NAB, the IBC show -- and they said that they were going to spend that money visiting customers instead. Since then, Pansonic's sewed up about 80% of all broadcast sales in Europe. Sounds like Avid's planning the same type of strategy; they'll be in Vegas and meeting directly with the clients but not bothering with putting on a booth.

Avid still owns the high end; Hollywood is an Avid town. They've almost completely lost the low end and are rapidly losing the middle. It's preposterous how quickly FCP is eating Avid's lunch on the lower end. They need to change, it's good to see them flat-out admitting it and committing to it.

Theatrical release? Of theatricals by major studios cut on Avid or FCP and making it to the theater, my guess would probably be 95% Avid. You'd know which ones were cut on FCP because Apple loudly trumpets them (Cold Mountain, etc). The ones you don't hear about (all the rest, basically) are usually Avid. Kong was cut on Avid, etc.
