Presenting my Pre-Firmware Upgrade, Post-Apocalyptic, naturally-lit passion project.

Hey guys and girls. Just released a music video I've been working on for the past year. It was all shot on the FS700 using Cine4, with natural/available lighting (apart from the paraffin lamp and a bike light inside the tent), and a budget that got us petrol, cigarettes and some food for the trip. I've been experimenting how to get the most out of the FS700 without Slog2, and I'd love to get some feedback/thoughts/discussion. I'm also happy to discuss details of the production/post-production process further.

great shots and I love the music (which is a personal matter of taste).
Regarding the budget and it's an outstanding project! Well done! Thanks
for sharing the bts also. Normally I would have expected a lot of people
running around the set ;-)

There is just one thing I noticed in post/edit: some cuts are some frames too
late and the edit doesn't follow the music. I saw it in the beginning and if you
see it once you will keep the eye on it. My 2cts..

I've got to admit that i just zapped through the shots, without any audio - Clermond is right on the editing, even if the cuts are just 1 or 2 frames off, the viewer will notice it (subliminally) - makes the piece feel a bit disordered - if that is the right term to describe it.

Thank you for the kind words Clermond! Yes it was a tight knit little team :D

I got into a trance at the end of my edit, not sure if the cuts were on time or not. Changing them, then changing them back. It got really frustrating as you could imagine! I agree some of those cuts are off - I'll be uploading a new version soon (thank goodness vimeo lets you replace files directly).

Thanks again Clermond, appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback Stefan! You're spot on, it throws off the flow. Those damn frames! hehe. I'll be uploading a tightened edit soon :)

maybe it's an old hat for experienced editors like you guys here:
you can put markers in the audio track to the beat that helps you to get back easy if you want to change it
(btw I love the magnetic timeline in FCP X, trimming single frames is really easy with shortcuts)
It's sometimes helpful to cut one frame before the beat not exactly at the beat. Give it it try..

Feel free to leave the "cut on the beat" route and avoid that it's getting dull because it's predictable.

I had a surprising encounter with an editor who's a good friend of mine. He was editing
a music video for a quite well known band and it was a nightmare. Lots of people coming into his suite
everybody wanted to have a say.. After dozens of re-edits he asked everybody politely to get out of the
suite. He put two markers in the timeline according to the length of the music and he edited the
video focussing on visual content. He put back the sound.. did some small corrections - surprising result.

When editing, i'm sometimes replaying one cut 5 times to check if the beat matches. I didn't really try the "beat-marker" thing Clermond mentioned, I'm more a friend of going back the last 5-10 seconds, hitting play and then hitting the edit key at the right time... seemed to work best for me.
