Prepare for the future? Or stick with the DVX?

Hey gang,

I'm about two weeks away from getting a pair of 100Bs.

Excited? Yep.

However I have a question.

HD is here for us to admire and within the next couple of years it seems likely a majority of people will be asking for HD content from those of us who do event and wedding videography.

I've been considering my choices and I'm giving serious thought to buying a 100B and an HVX200 instead of the 2 100Bs

I'll have my SD footage for the immediate future AND I'll be ready to start shooting HD once the demand (and the pricing of recording (P2/on cam HDD) and archival (BD/HD-DVD) media) come down to a financially acceptable level. Then all I have to do is replace one camera and not two once I'm ready to make that big jump.

So. From the great minds here at DVXUser... stick with a pair of 100Bs or mix it up a bit and future plan?

Additional information. I have a fulltime job (unrelated to this field) so my equipment purchases aren't entirely dependent on how much work I get through the videography. In other words I can extend my budget to get the HVX but is it really necessary at this time?

Mind you, the thought of getting some real 60p slomo for a wedding or a dance recital are kind of exciting but that can't be the only reason I get the HVX.

Thanks for your time.

sincerely,

ian

I agree. You can always use the HVX to shoot DV to tape to mix with the 100B, so there's no real reason not to buy one if you have the funds available. Plus, once you get a couple of P2 cards, you could utilize DVCPRO50 for better color rendition in SD.

I mostly agree with those guys. Definitely go with the HVX, if you can afford it. I would say get ONE HVX and go nuts with various accessories, including a NLE that is HD-capable. The features of the HVX far outweight the DVX, in my opinion. I've owned a DVX100A (which was great), but recently sold it for money toward my new HVX. Totally worth it!
