Premiere Pro vs Xpress Pro?????

I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2 & Production Suite. Should I upgrade my editing gear by going to Avid Xpress Pro?

At the moment I do short films, wedding videos, documentry work and may be doing some TV ads in the future.

I use a DVX100b and so far I am fairly pleased with my production process with adobe's range of production programs.

IS IT WORTH CHANGING TO AVID XPRESS PRO?

Hopefully this helps others in the same boat!

My experience with AVID Xpress was...not so hot. Glitches between software, hardware and OS anomalies pushed me off the Windows platform and onto the MAC about two years ago. I sold my AVID stock. The FCP / ADOBE products do so much better and for less. If you're a die-hard windows user, the ADOBE products are really nice to work with. The only argument / best argument for the AVID stuff now (at the level you/we are working) is that it has been the industry standard for so long. So, if you're segging into work for large production studios, you'll need to know the AVID stuff. However, the new FCP Studio is...awesome.

If you are pleased with your workflow then it doesn't worth changing.
On the other hand it is like comparing jaguar to yugo. For large projects avid is a savior. But it has a steep learning curve. For me avid is just pro.

If you have the certified systems and hardware to run avid it is by far the best to me. I've used vegas, FCP, and Premier just no comparison as far as being a cutter. Although I'm really liking the looks of FCP Studio's new color corrector.

Like Steve said thoe if you are pleased with your workflow then it isn't worth changing.

Even at Xpress Pro, there are things you can do with Avid that (at least as far as I've seen) you just can't do with Premeiere. It's simply a more powerful program, especially when it comes to color correction.

if your serious about changing and if you get into really high end stuff go for the avid media composer.

I use both Xpress Pro & Premiere Pro. Both have their strengths & weaknesses. As noted above, Xpress Pro is great for long form large projects. Project Management is one of it's super strenghts. Also, Xpress' real time playback easily beats Premiere's. I'm of the opinion that Avid requires more forethought & preplanning being a little more difficult to move things around on the timeline than Premiere. But this is not neccesarily a bad thing. I cut my 'editing teeth' on Avid and I'm glad I did. And if you're doing off-line or going to broadcast it's the smartest choice hands down.
Premiere's strength lies in it's integration with Adobe's other programs. I only do cuts in an NLE. Everything else, dissolves, titles, color work etc. I do in After Effects. This kills me when working with Xpress Pro - I've suffered through so many QT reference fiasco's with Avid it's insane. I spend so much less time rendering when I'm using Premiere. Again, I think Premiere's timeline tools allow you to work much more non-linearly than Avid and this is sometimes a good thing.
