no, mpeg layer 2 is not as compatable with dvd players - if you use encore dvd, it has a option to compress to ac3 in it - with premiere pro, you have to buy a $150 plugin. Meaning, let matrox output the uncompressed then treat that separately.

MPEG layer 2 is actually a supported audio format on PAL DVDs but that's probably a nitpik in this conversation.

Jay Jay, the plugin for PPro is called Surcode from Minnetonka Audio. It also provides 5.1 surround capability. I believe that the version that installs with PPro allows you to run it 2 or 3 times as a trial. You invoke it by selecting dolby audio output in the Adobe Media Encoder export pages.

Another option is to check out BeSweet. It's a separate utility for converting audio files. It will do AC3, I believe, and last time I checked it's freeware. You can find it quick with google.

so i should compress the video first in mpeg, and then do the audio seperate and then linked them in dvdworkshop correct?

Yes, that's what I do in PPro. In the Adobe Media Encoder page, be sure to NOT select then DVD multiplexing option. This will give you seperate video and audio files. The audio will be PCM audio.

At this point I normally import the files into Encore which will convert the PCM audio to AC3. Doesn't dvdworkshop have the same ability? If not, you should still be able to convert PCM->AC3 separately and then combine them on the DVD.

oh, so dvd multiplexing is seperating the audio form the video?

i think that dvd workshop does have that option i will look ito it. thank you

The multiplexing option combines video and audio into a single file. You want seperate files.
