Premiere messing up 24p footage

My 24p footage looks like crap once I put it in the timeline or export! Every 4th frame looks "interlaced". I believe that is what is happening, but I'm not sure. And I definitely don't know why it's happening.

-I'm using a DVX100B with 24p setting (not 24pA) squeezed for widescreen.
-Premiere Pro CS3 Mac OS
-24p widescreen project in premiere.
-Import the video using Quicktime "DV/DVCPRO" Compression with the 29.97 frames, Progressive, and 16:9 settings.
(I was able to figure out that 29.97 is the correct setting, because even though the footage is 24p, it's laid down on 29.97)

Video looks good after importing. I can play the clip and it's fine or play it outside of premiere fine. But as soon as I drop it into the timeline and play it in the preview window, I can see that every 4th frame looks interlaced. The result of this is it plays like crap on a TV because every 4th frame has a flicker effect. I've also tried exporting from the timeline and it still does this interlace/flicker effect.

Any help MUCH appreciated. Footage looks great, but I can't do anything with it until I fix this problem.

You either need to use 24p with a 29.97 timeline or 24pA with a 24p timeline. Regular 24p is meant to be edited in a 29.97
timeline and 24pA in 24p timeline.

Hey thanks, I will definitely capture some 24pa footage and try that out. I know there are a TON of posts about similar issues with 24p in Premiere, but could you just let me know the actual presets, project settings, and capture settings that you are using for 24p and/or 24pa? That'd be really helpful. I actually did try to use the 29.97 preset with my 24p footage, and although it looks better, I am still seeing some interlacing going on...

Is it only the preset that is the issue or do you think it is also the capture settings (i.e. the DV/DVCPRO Codec) that I am using?

Thanks,

John

Hey I just tried 24p preset with 24pA footage and I'm having the same troubles. 30p footage looks fine in premiere, but 24p or 24pA footage always has interlaced frames. No clue whats going on...

you can edit BOTH 24pa and 24pn in the 24p presets projects in premiere. you just HAVE TO USE SCENE DETECT WHEN CAPTURING YOUR FOOTAGE. this is the single most common issue with anyone having trouble using 24p in premire from a tape capture. the program works great with both versions opf 24p recording and edits them both at 24p or 29.976, you just need to use scene detect so that the 24p cadance isnt broken up as it captures one long clip. premiere only looks at the first few frames of every clip it cpatures and decides what the correct pulldown is to extract the 24p from that . the problem is that every time you stop recording and start recording with the camera, the camera starts the cadance over again and it doesnt usually line up with where it left off from the last shot unless you get lucky. so when you capture everything as one long clip premiere uses the same pattern to extract the true 24p for he whole clip even though the pattern is broken up on the tape between shots. if you use scene detect, it looks at the first few frames of each new shot and correctly recognizes the pulldown pattern again to get the 24p correctly.
