Premiere CS5 Stuttering Playback

I recently purchased CS5, moving from an old 2gig ram, dual core system to a 8 gig ram, quad core setup.

I did some initial tests with an uncompressed full HD file, which my old computer couldn't keep up with at all. I was delighted to find my new system ran the file smoothly, and premiere CS5 also ran in realtime, even with an effect or two added. This was a test, before my final system setup. My drives were in a raid 0.

Fast forward a couple weeks (without using premiere). I start editing some footage (cineform, which my old computer could even play just fine), to find my playback to be stuttering, even at half rez. I was surprised, and decided to test my system again using the uncompressed footage I used in my original tests. I found that it would no longer play smoothly, not at full rez, half, or even quarter. Even stranger is that my cpu is only running at 10% or so during playback.

My specs are:

i7 860 quad core
8 Gig Ram
Nvidia XFX GS 7600
1TB Samsung F3 Drives - Raid 1
500gig scratch drive

Any ideas why I would be having this poor system and premiere performance?

You list a 1TB RAID 1 setup. Are you running your media files on the same drive as your OS? Ideally with footage like that you'd want to run a minimum of a two drive RAID 0, possibly more for uncompressed.

I'm using Neoscene version 1.6.

I've tested having the video files on several different drives, once on the same drive as my operating system, once on my scratch drive, and once on an external drive (all are pretty fast). The speed was about the same on each.

So you think a Raid 0 setup would fix the issue?

When I say stuttering, I mean that the video is not playing smoothly in real time, as happens when the computer isn't powerful enough (which I don't think should be the case with my current machine :undecided
