Premiere CS5 Mercury Engine With Unsupported Card

no one running cs5 on mac pro?

I am one of those folks trying to decide if I should get another mac pro (mainly for its dual boot -- vegas win7 -- stable pro tools osx ) and now for PP CS5 whether it be on the mac or windows side of the mac pro ---- because --- i am totally topping out using vegas and not a big fan of FCP.

so i am again faced with the old decision--- should I get another mac pro or a new PC...and if i go PC --- which one!

I'm running CS5 on my MacBook Pro 15in. It has the 9600M GT and the 9400M. Neither card works with it. I edited the supported card list and everything, and sadly it failed the required memory test (because 765MB are required, and 511MB are present.) But I'll tell you this. I. Love. My MBP. I used to be a windows purist, but my friend had a macbook pro, and I would go to his house a lot and play around with it, so I decided to ask for one as my graduation present. I've been very happy with it. But yes, unfortunately even with the 330GT in the new ones, it isn't supported for hardware acceleration due to the fact that it only has 512MB of vram. :(

If you've got the 1GB version it will work.

I've got the GT240 and it works like a charm! Man, it is just awesome. I can now play 5 1080p clips from the Panasonic GH1 picture in picture. And I can play those 1080p clips with curves and color correction applied, which was not possible before as well. Best invention since sliced bread :D

You can get those cards for under 100Euros. Absolutely no need to update my graphicscard now.

Great tip. Just bought a Sweex GT240 1GB second hand for 50 euro's! and it works great.

it works with ANY CUDA supported card, so long as they have over 1GB of RAM. This was a HUGE oversight and a massive mistake, i believe, on Adobe's part. I'll be damned if i ever believe the hype about nVidia's ultra high end cards again, and we have a pair of FX3800's we just bought a few weeks back for the CS5 transition. If i can, they are going back.

I have an ANCIENT 9800GTX+ OC 1GB that is absolutely SCREAMING compared to CS4, same specs. As a matter of fact, on my rather meager home PC, my export times are about 2.8x faster in CS5 Media Encoder vs CS4, render times are 9.8x faster with the CUDA/MPE enabled vs CS4.

CS5 renders almost 3x faster on a 3 year old card vs CS4 (same system, specs, and card obviously no MPE or hardware acceleration). Q6600 stock clocked, 8GB 800mhz DDR2, 9800GTX+ OC 1GB, RAID 0 install, render, and source drives. G33 derived MOBO.

CS4
a 6:30 second HDV clip exported to 1440x1080 29.97 drop-frame MPEG-2 (15Mb min/18 target/28 max) takes 73 minutes with NO effects to export with AME, and Premiere Pro closed out.

Render time was 1 hour 5 minutes.

CS5
same 6:30 second HDV clip exported to 1440x1080 29.97 drop-frame MPEG-2 (15Mb min/18 target/28 max) took 6:21 seconds with NO effects and Premiere Pro closed out, just AME encoding.

Render time was 17 minutes flat, thats WITH the CUDA/Mercury enabling modification. That means i can actually work at home rather than running into the office every time. This also means if im just retouching footage or just transcoding i can do it easily at home while i sleep.

Oh how I miss the days where I could sit back, feet on the desk for a couple hours and say to my boss "rendering."

:)
