Premiere CS4 and AVC-Intra

Just downloading an update to my CS4 suite that apparently adds AVC-Intra compatibility.

Now I don't have to worry about "accidentally" shooting in AVC-Intra (again).

How well does it work in reality? Is it fast to edit?

Also: I just saw that you have an XHA1 (me as well). Have you tried to mix footage with the 300?

I just upgraded last night. I plan to test it today at work. I've never used my XH-A1 with our 300 in the same project.

At work, we still use CS3 (it takes more to upgrade a bunch of editors). I use CS4 personally at home. I installed the upgrade on my Macbook Pro, and will take it to work today to test some AVC-Intra footage. I'll take a few clips at home and test it on my Mac Pro workstation, too.

The CS4 4.0.2 upgrade for Premiere Pro does indeed support AVC-I which is great and a big step forward. Unfortunately After Effects still does not support AVC-I, which sucks!

I think Adobe should get it together on this. People using CS4 for video production need AE, I use PP but I think for the majority of people who have an edit suite in this price range are going to use Final Cut NOT Premiere Pro.

Adobe could take a BIG percentage of the Final Cut users if they could just get AVC-I to work in AE.

Just my opinion,

I find that odd, too, that Adobe opted not to include AVC-Intra in AE. Perhaps that update is yet to come.

My Macbook Pro was able to play AVC-Intra only after Premiere rendered the time line. My Mac Pro was able to play the clips regardless of rendering.

But I also think it was odd that even in an AVC-Intra timeline, AVC-Intra clips need rendered.

I was very happy to see the update but then almost as unhappy that AE doesn't yet support the codec. We use both the Adobe suite and Final Cut and I really always prefer to work in PPRO and AE. The fact that I can now edit in PPRO in AVC-Intra 100 (we have an HPX 300) but CAN'T open the project in AE to color grade, matte, vfx stuff, etc., just really sucks.

AVC-Intra and AE

AVC-Intra and AE

Sorry to tell you... I have a guy at Adobe (in Sweden) that I used to discuss things with at a swedish film forum. According to him there will be no support for AVC-Intra in After Affects until next generation. Which I suppose would mean AE CS5...

BUT... my own assumptions:
1. Adobe should soon realize that they must support it sooner
2. Perhaps Adobe will quite soon release AE CS5?

I did an automatic update of Premiere, but was not aware that it would allow me to edit AVCintra! I shot 2 jobs in the last month in AVCIntra-50 (1080 60i) and delivered hard drives to the editor (Grass Valley Edius editor.) I t was unnerving to shoot with a format that I couldn't come home and check for myself on my Premiere system! I am now able to play back the AVCIntra-50 footage on the computer monitor with no rendering*... and that's playing the footage from a 2TB 5400 rpm external USB hard drive! Normally I would not edit on a USB drive, but in this case it's just a safety back up.

OK, not having AE support yet is a bummer, but I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy here... I'm glad that it at least works now with Premiere!

Remember that P2 Viewer would let you see your footage, whether you had Premiere or EDIUS or whatever. It's not an editor, but for people who want to be able to view AVC-Intra footage, the latest version of P2 Viewer does that.

That said, I'm sure you liked that nice little surprise since you weren't expecting it!

What's the latest version of the P2 Viewer? Our P2 Viewer systems at work still tend to "hang" the system when using our new "E" series 32-gig P2 cards.

I transcode on my Macbook Pro in Final Cut to ProRes422. HQ. It comes out 10 bit which is great but in Windows ie. After Effects it will only see it as 8 bit.
It works though. This way sometimes I can go into Color on the Mac side and color correct.

Adobe should get it together and get support for AE, they did so good with the Red so I am guessing that there is a $$$ problem with support not a tech problem.
