I just bought a new PC that came with Vista. Next step is purchasing CS3. I am wondering if I should run CS3 on Vista or revert back to XP and then install CS3?
There's been much discussion on this topic on Adobe's PP3 forums. There are some there with a lot of experience that say avoid Vista at all cost.
However, I'm on Vista and have been deep into almost all of CS3 (PP, AE, SB, PS, AI and EN) and with the exception of Encore (which is as flaky as a crack-head on the witness stand), all else is running very well. AE is rock solid. PP needs to be restarted because it runs out of memory once or twice a day but it almost never exits and loses your work.
I did run PP and AE on an XP laptop before I got the new machine and did have a few more PP problems, but it's 2GHz dual core system with only 2GB RAM. The new system is a desktop with 3GHz dual core with 4GB RAM
Just in the midst of building a new system myself...and debated this same issue long and hard....but decided to stick with XP because it works!
The jury is still out on Vista...and frankly apart from nicer looks...DX10 support for gamers....I'm not sure what the benefits of it are!
I stuck with XP because it seems less resource hungry and more lean...we're putting XP back on our staff laptops at school because they just run much quicker that when we installed Vista. (Catch cry from some teachers was "these computers are much slower than our old ones"...and this about machines 3 years newer and spec wise superior!)
In particular Exchange 03, Outlook and Vista was incredibly sluggish across our Vista laptops...a problem instantly fixed with an XP install.I also found the game "Company of Heroes" would suddenly work when I returned to XP from Vista on my Core 2 Duo laptop.....
now admittedly none of this is "CS3"....but it already raises alarm bells....
I'd love to see a benchmark comparison with identical systems running XP and Vista...and some real world figures....
It feels a bit strange to deliberately buy an older OS...but that is exactly what I have done!
As far as Vista is concerned I'm not sure that "all that glitters is gold"
Aside from the fact that Vista will hog more of your system rescources just to run the O.S. which means more sluggish program performance, your going to have to content with any device driver issues that arise for additional hardware and/or software that you would like to run that isnt vista ready yet. .. so lets say you actually get all of CS3 and your supporting hardware to run perfectly on your new vista machine .. great . but what about when you go to install your additional third party program or hardware to do a little more than what CS3 does? ..will you have driver issues like alot of other people? .. will you have incompatability issues still? .. will you want to smash your machine into an oblivion? theres just no certainty in trying to run a vista machine right now, and thats why so many people arent doing it. its not because people are afraid of change, but rather that they nees to know that everything is going to work. and if the only real "advantage" that vista is offering them is a few transparent windows for the O.S. that hog all your system rescources, and system security (which doesnt matter if your not online). its really just a question of why would you really want to run vista? what do you really have to gain vs what could you potentially lose?
vista is the new "Windows ME" in my opinion, and its almost certain that you cant run or use everything your going to want to on a Mac .. the support just isnt there yet, and if it actually did run all the gazillion of programs and hardware that windows does, im sure it would be just as buggy. meanwhile XP is a pretty solid platform because its been around for quite a while and has been tweaked the heck out of to get it where its at right now.
