I'm sure this is pretty str8 forward but what would i need to do to achieve this? eg. split screen, picture on left half of the split screen slides to the right over the right half of screen filling the entire frame/screen.

I'm sure it's very common, but i've really never figured it out.

Try keyframing the scale and position attributes in the motion properties. Should give you something passable.

I hated motion in Premiere 6.5, but it might be better in the new Pro versions (haven't tried it). Either way, I would probably use After Effects.

Version 6.5 does not have a Motion menu as in the Pro versions. It's been a while since I used it but I believe you have to right click on the footage and select Clip Motion which will cause a separate window to pop up that will allow you to set end point and beginning point for the clip by grabbing two dots on the screen and moving them. This is really a pain as you will have to make sure that both points end up on the same point or you will experience shaking in your footage.

If 6.5 offers a Garbage Matte filter then it would work better. Drop the filter on the top video layer and adjust the mask so that it crops out the half of the video you don't want and the bottom layer will shows up.
