Premier capture settings and questions

I'm a writer who just decided to make a movie on his own. I've had some prior video experience - some Evening News, some events dance and videography.

So I went out and bought the Panasonic DVX100b, and shot all the footage for my 7-minute film in one weekend. :)

Now I'm editing, and I have some questions at the capture stage:

- what's the best possible capture setting?

- what's the best possible export setting?

- Is there a noticeable difference in the *visual quality* of output from Adobe Premiere vs. Final Cut Pro? As opposed to the ease-of-use of the programs, and other issues?

Basically, am I going to have a buy a Mac and FCP in order to have a decent-looking film - or can it be done with Premiere, even tho the prog itself may be more of a pain in the ass?

- basically, how can i get the possible-looking footage?

And also, if anyone has some further ideas for resources, I would *love* to hear 'em.

I have read about films made using this camera, being transferred to HD and then to film, and looking virtually indistinguishable from film. That's not what I'm seeing! So I'm sure that I can get better-looking footage than what I'm seeing.

I'm on an AMD Athlon box, running Windows XP, with Adobe Premier 2.0 (the new one). video card, ATI all-in-wonder 9600. I'm capturing the footage via firewire, not using a video capture card.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

That PC sounds really capable. Premiere and FCP are pretty much the same program, just on different platforms and different shortcuts. If you wanted the industry standard you could use AVid. I don't use it because I don't know how, so just use what is comfortable for you. I use Premiere 1.0 if that helps.
