and you only get 'approx. 3 seconds for HD recordings', quotes are indicating text from the Panasonic HVX-200 manual page 47.
Here's an idea I plan to use. Set the P2 cards to LOOP REC, page 48. The cards fill up and then continue to record over the existing footage in a loop from card to card. So when you stop recording there will be the previous amount of time recorded on the cards i.e. 16 minutes in HD on 2 8gig cards. I'll take that over 3 seconds!
If you try it let us know how it worked. TAG! Your the Guinea Pig!
Prerec and loop both work fine, but the issue with loop is that once you've gotten your clip, your cards are full and you'll have to offload them both and start over. There's no way to trim a clip in-camera. So loop works great for what it's designed for, but as a general-purpose always-leave-it-on type of thing, pre-rec may be more usable.
I am thinking of pre-record in terms of capturing a moment that won't be repeated i.e. building collapse, rescue, special announcement during an hour long speech.
The P2 cards break up the clips into 5 minute continuos clips. Would it be possible to delete the clips that contain the excess footage and keep the one with the moment? Also, if it is all on one card, could the other card formatted and used for further recording?
And why does my font size change every time I use spell check?
