Practicing editing

Why does Avid take so much time in importing the files from hard disk(files are of type avi, divx, xvid)?

I tried converting them .mov but still it is taking so much time. I just want to learn the basics of editing ...is there an alternative for importing the files or should I change the software???

What version of Avid are you working with? And yes, there is an EXCELLENT reason why it takes so much time to import the files.

Those are some crappy formats with the exception of AVI. Besides that, how long is long? Also it depends on your file raster. There is a good reason which is once it's done it is in Avid's media and the Avid media is very efficient.

You can always try something like MPEG Streamclip to transcode from those formats to an Avid QT wrapped resolution first. Perhaps that will be faster overall.

You should probably change software. Avid isn't designed to edit just any old format you throw at it. YOu need to either capture it from a camera or deck into the system, or shoot a tapeless format that is supported. It is designed for broadcast tape and tapeless formats. Not for odd and strange video file formats.
