Practical Lightning on a Budget

Hey gang...

I'd really like to simulate lightning in the next short project I'll be shooting on the HVX200A.

The set up is... our protagonists are in a dark house that has lost power, and the lightning flashes for dramatic effect.

At first, I was thinking strobe light.... then I was told by a rental company that a product called "Lightning Strikes" is the best way to go. Unfortunately, these run $250 a day, and I can't really afford that price for this short (we'll be renting various 'normal' lights as well).

Anyway, I'm looking for a lightning flash solution that I can rent/buy for more in the neighborhood of $20-40 a day.

Any ideas?

I worked on a shoot where they used these metal shutters in front of a powerful light to simulate lightning strikes. It worked well enough. Might be something to look into.

Evil, one of the local rental places just suggested that to me... Glad to hear that it worked out on your shoot.

So they just had a crew member standing by the light, flicking the shutter open and closed?
