Practical HD End-Product

I'm curious, for all of you shooting in HD now, besides broadcast or cable on-demand movies, where else do I see HD? For now are you just "down-rezing" your projects for DVD output and you plan to wait for not only HD DVD players (whatever format wins) but also a somewhat affordable way to burn to these new HD DVDs. It sounds like it's still at least 6+ months out for the commercial players to come out, who knows when the burners will come out.

I just ask because I have a DVX100a and I love how HD looks, but should I spend the money for a new HD camera when practically I can only showcase my stuff for someone sitting at my computer for another 6 months to a year? Perhaps by then a better HD camera will be out.

I'm still a newbie to this so go easy if I've mistated anything :).

Apple's DVD Studio Pro 4 burns hd dvd's which are only readable on other Apple computers with enough processing power. You can always export back to an HDV camera and carry that around. I believe D-VHS is too uncommon, yet I can easily buy a deck at fry's. more so than say a DVCPRO HD or HDCAM deck.

I say go ahead and get the HD cam if you absolutely need it. If you do, you'll find a way to showcase your HD material.

People talk a lot about "future proofing"

As you mentioned we all know that commercial HD players are coming (whether BluRay or HD DVD, etc). It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

So even if you can't play your stuff in HD today, if you're working on something that you hope will have some life past the next few years it might be a good idea to think about HD aquisition.

But, for most stuff (at least the work I do), it isn't really an issue yet.
I think it all depends on what you're shooting, and what your intended audience is.
