FS5: PPs and Grading

Shot with the FS5 and a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 @ 1.4.

Just playing with PPs a bit. First shown w/o grading, then with grading, in FCPX using ColorFinale and some basic correction then adding REC 709 Tetrachrome 400 FC LUT at 60%.

These are my first 2 tries at custom PPs.

This is a very contrasty scene and you can really tell the Slog2 keeps the highlights better.

olof-

if i may ask, was this hd/422 or 4k/420?

thank you for the effort and the sharing.

be well.

Thanks for sharing - I'm also trying to get to grips with the Picture profiles. Do you know if Sony offer a overall description for each of their PP's - I'd like to ideally find a profile that could be used along side 5d mk III's

Best bet is to go through and check the settings for each PP as it comes. This will give you the general idea.

Hook the cam up to an eval monitor and shoot out the window or set up a scene and try different things. It is a bit of work but well worth it...

It was shot 1080 30P XAVC-L 50mb/s on the FS5 and a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 @ 1.4.

olof-

thank you for the reply.

i don't know what mac you are using but how was it working with this short piece in xavc-L?

if you are still in the testing mood, perhaps do the same test but employ the 4k setting so others can judge a fast color fix to 8bit 420 footage that troubles many.

thanks in advance for your efforts.

be well.

Prior to buying a good monitor it was a tuff trying to judge PP setting (the Sony LCD did not cut it) and going back and forth with cards was a royal pain. With the fs5 I wonder if you could just set it up to stream to your computer via cat5? seems like scopeBox by Divergentmedia would be great if it would function with streaming FS5 video

@RayB
My setup for dialing in a cam these days is my Pro Eval monitor and the Odyssey 7Q+. The Odyssey has very accurate scopes and my JVC DT 24" calibrated monitor is very color accurate. Scopes are very important to spot small differences in Custom PPs, in conjunction with a true eval monitor.

I can also use my Black Magic Thunderbolt SDI interface to hook into Scopebox, but frankly the Odyssey is easier to use and there is no lag like with Scopebox., not to mention it goes on location with me.

I also use this combo when editing. As well as the scopes in FCPX. My big eval monitor and my Odyssey 7Q+ are identical if I calibrate the O7Q+ so I trust it a lot in the field as well. It also can display custom LUTs I make up and often use in editing so I can see how something will look after grading in the field as I am shooting. And I often use it as a monitor editing with my MBP traveling, I have the cheap Black Magic SDI and HDMI Thunderbolt Playback dongle, it works great.

Personally because of my style of shooting I use custom in all my cams almost all the time. Some of my PPs are using Slog but most are not, I use Cine4 a lot as a starting point.

@robfilms
My iMac and my MBP both handle the 4K UHD XAVC-L OK, the iMac TOL 2013 ( with very fast 6 drive RAID L5) plays 2 streams fine, needs bit of rendering if I apply a heavy grade and graphics with dissolves, but it renders very fast. My MBP TOL 2014 plays 1 stream fine so a cut only quick edit in the field needs no rendering. Any CC or complex editing on the MBP would benefit from setting up proxy footage, but for cuts only it is plenty fast.

I did an earlier post with UHD footage:
