PPro to AE Dynamic Linking-best practices

Hi
Doing all my CC and grading in AE. for the first time. However not sure if its a best practice to work with single clips at a time, or if I should link entire sequences?

I agree the workflow isn't perfect, but really like Color Finesse in AE. In combination with adjustment layers, the built in support for a fully linearized workspace if you need color management(which PPro doesn't have) and the endless number of filters etc, I think its a MUCH more powerful workflow.

I import a Premiere Pro timeline into AfterEffects. It will create a layer for each clip. You lose your transitions. No biggie.

Agreed. And then I'd recommend rendering the comp out as a video and importing that back into Premiere for final export instead of trying to use dynamic link to bring the comp directly into Premiere. I find dynamic link is mostly useful for getting stuff from Premiere into AE...beyond that it seems too slow and bloated to be useful for larger projects.

Why not retain dynamic linking? And why render out a comp when in AE...you're losing a generation! I use Dynamic linking and think its a great feature...only wish there was something as powerful between PPro and Audition.

Well, if it works for you that's great...but I've had problems with slow loading times, slow render times (rendering via dynamic link is always slower than rendering in the actual program or media encoder) and outright crashes...especially with third party plug-ins. And I'm not sure what you mean about losing a generation...you shouldn't be rendering intermediates to a lossy codec if you can help it.

But the bottom line is the best workflow is the one that works for you.

So far, what is working for me is after editing everything in Ppro, then DL to AE especially for Warp Stabilizer or other effects. Then i use MBL in Ppro after the WS has rendered through DL.
Having some issues with transitions but seems to be doing the job. CC (MBL) is the last step in Ppro for me.

From my experience the best was to work entirely in Premiere.

I really enjoyed using Color Finesse as an adjustment layer in AE, but I found the whole dynamic link thing slow when bringing back into Premiere.

I tried exporting after CC in AE and then bringing it back into Premiere. But it was an extra step of rendering.

I haven't used colorista enough to give my thoughts on it. But I just like working in curves. Are there adjustable curves in colorista? I know I can change values on different settings to adjust the curve, but can I physically move the curves to the shape I want?

For precision control and smooth, film-like contrast adjustments. Provides a quick way to get a film-like contrast in the shot. Get a master curves contrast as well as individual RGB channel controls.

Yep, still a much easier work flow to just get Colorista II and Looks and do it all inside of PP.

And the end product is very likely to be every bit as good.

I render TGA files out of AE and import the TGA sequence in PP. There's no real-time playback but the files are lossless and uncompressed. I make my MPEG2, DVD and BlueRay and web files out of PP. It's fastest to render out of AE like this. You can enable multiple frames at once for multicore processors and its lossless. Also the Dynamic Link really slows things down when going back to PP from AE. You sidestep this with my method.

Unless u have a beast of a machine I would do dynamic linking. But in most cases, I would copy the clip from the sequence, paste it to a comp of the same length, do effects and such in AE and render it out and reimport it to PPro
