PP5.5 - AVCHD transcoding - what codec? Yes I know ......

Why are you re-iterating the same point? I said that it helps with playback when LAYERING, so it must be doing something to decode, otherwise how could a GPU change alone give you more layers?

No, it might be faster because CUDA may be used for either a blend mode operation if the clips are overlaid, or it may be used for downscaling if the shots are scaled down and put next to each other. You raised a valid point that the GPU is used for more than effects...but I wanted to reiterate that decoding is definitely not done on the GPU.

Here it is straight from Adobe:

Yes, your GPU has to have at least 1GB of dedicated memory. My VAIO doesn't have an officially supported chipset (330M with 1GB), but it's incredibly easy to add it to the supported card list and it does make a noticeable difference in performance.

Surely I'm not reading this right--are you saying you can ADD ON-BOARD MEMORY to a video card? I think I must be misunderstanding this part.

I have been testing cineform all day on a mac and the performance is terrible. I noticed the Adobe QT32 Server process killing my CPU and read in the Adobe forums that any file with a .MOV extension will utilize the 32 bit quicktime app which will create all kinds of performance issues. Am I missing something or does Cineform not work for Premiere CS5.5 on the mac? Should I just use Clipwrap and rename to a .MPG extension or should I use the Avid DNXHD codec? What codec should I use? Any help is appreciated. I am about to throw this computer out the window....

You're not "SOL" if you don't have a supported card, or even if you don't do the hack. The Mercury Playback Engine still runs, just in software-only mode. It's still an impressive engine without it. It's just that much better with hardware support.

You will not need to transcode AVCHD if you have a decently recent machine. And if it's a 64-bit machine, as it has to be, then it's probably fine.
