Powering the Marshall Monitor

My Marshall arrives tomorrow and I still don't know what I am going to do about powering the thing. I was thinking I was going to get the bescor battery some people have, but people are saying it only powers the monitor 3-4 hours. I would love to have something that powers it all day, without having to wear a battery belt. But maybe i'm that's not possible.

I was thinking about the IDX system but it's really pricey. The only reason I lean that way is that I will be purchasing the PowerPod from RedRock when it comes out and I could use the IDX batteries with that.

Those of you that have the monitor, what kind of run times are you getting on your batteries?

Can one purchase the upgrade module without purchasing the monitor?

I think you can: go to the Nebtek site.
The folks there have been very helpful in my experience.

But if you plan to use your Marshall with non-Panasonic batteries, there is a chance the current implementation of the Nebtek will not make a good connection between the battery and the connector on the monitor. They said they were going to look into fixing this and you might want to wait until they do if you plan to use non-Panny batteries.

I can only say for certain that it does not work well with Lenmark batteries because those are the non-Panny batteries I have. Thankfully, I have a couple of Panny batteries too, so I'll be ok with mine.

Good luck.

2 Bescor packs run at roughly $440 -

Nebtek upgrade will be $300 + batteries , let's just say 3 HVX batteries bought of this site would run you total = $540 , hundred dollars more and more weight - it all comes down to preference and finances - i like my bescor though, its small and doesn't add weight

The Nebtek upgrade cost $225
I get about 4 hours per (DVX USER or included HVX) Battery.
I get about 2.5 hours on the 3000mah batteries that come with the origional DVX (or from Fry's).

So carlone....you dont have any issues with the non Panny batteries. My DVXuser batteries wont stay on the plate right. I have to really press them down and if I let go and just move the monitor slightly, it loses connection and powers the monitor off.

Thanks,
John G.

Wow Carlone... 4 hours? Does that include powering off or putting the monitor into standby when not using it between takes or just straight running it the whole time? My experience is about 2.5 hours straight run time. I'd be interested to know if yours is consistently longer (although I don't know what I would do with the info).

Thanks for the responses!

rdgfilms, about how long do you get out of your bescor batteries? Do you find that having two lasts you throughout a good long day just fine?

I have to say that my debate is between the bescor batteries and an IDX system. I'd love to just spend the 440 for 2 bescors, but they will becomes useless if and when I get the RedRock PowerPod. But shelling out all that cash for some IDX batteries and a charger is a tough pill to swallow.

Brian, that's kinda where I'm at on this. I like the idea of a single battery system. I was thinking about picking up the turbo charger special from Specialized Comm (mainly for the HVX)....but was also looking at the battery system from Zacuto. Anyone have experience with the Zacuto battery system?

Just a FWIW:

We'll be soon running a DVXuser SPECIAL on a Spec-Comm HVX/DVX battery TOGETHER with an adapter. It looks like this:
http://vidled.com/DVX_adapter.jpg
and will cost $100.00 (for a limited time).

Now to run the Marshall Monitors we'd need to boost voltage to 12V, and here's where I 'd like to know how much power these suckers consume.
What is the most common Marshall Monitor that is being used currently? It is referred to here only as "Marshall Monitor", and I was wondering which one was popular nowadays. They make many different ones, and their specs are all over the place as far as power consumtion is concerned.

Okay, great, and thanks for the link, Brian.

According to the specs that one uses ~7W, which would work fine with a DC-DC voltage converter I'm looking at trying.

Will post results after making a prototype.

I turn it off if there's a going to be a long break (5 minutes or more). For instance, if we're changing the lights or going to a new camera position (or breaking for something to drink, it's been VERY hot here lately).

You're right, The DVX battery does not have a tight connection at all and therefore is useless with the Marshall.. The HVX battery (same size and power as the DVX battery) works perfect. I also had purchased some Panasonic battery's awhile ago from EVS that work perfect - so the motto is: only use Panasonic branded batterys.
